He had his left ear pierced on the lobe for awhile because he thought it made him look cool, but the hole has since closed up

Van is the epitome of the All American High School Athlete when not at work. Most at home in jeans, a plain cotton t-shirt, and something thrown over top - plaid? Varsity jacket? Denim/pleather jacket? Here for it. He is either in Nikes or his favorite pair of converse high tops.

As a fire dragon Van has never been cold a moment in his entire life and thus does not know what it means to own a coat. He would be a "shorts in the waist deep snow" kind of guy if it wouldn't get him in trouble. At most he'll go for a toboggan and some mittens should the weather get particularly fierce, and maybe a scarf to cover his face to keep his Humans friends from panicking.

A side effect is that Van can't tolerate the heat as well as the next person; he has to run in and out of the kitchen frequently at the diner and prefers to keep at a reasonable 68F (20C) inside. The moment it starts getting warm outside Van is exclusively found in muscle tank top and basketball shorts. He does not like the Hot Springs because they are Too Hot™ but will still go hang there if his friends want to.

Van's main focus in life revolves around three things: COOKING, FITNESS, and POSITIVITY. Yes, caps are required. For emphasis. He may be a dragon, but all in all, he's more like a puppy than the hulking, brooding beast of legend. Always full of energy, loves to play, easily emotionally wounded, great with training!

He has managed to find his passion in life, which is to cook good soul food for people, and throws himself heart and soul into that passion. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, luncheon, dinner, supper, anything that can be cooked, guaranteed Van can make it. Please don't ever tell him you don't like something he's made. You will crush his spirit and put him in the kitchen for the next 24-48 hours desperately trying to make something you WILL like, and the last thing he needs is another oven set on fire from overuse.

As a side effect of his love for cooking, he has also developed a love for FITNESS. And the GYM. You know what's great? Sunrise jogs! Try to race the sun as it rises! Parkour as you're doing it! Get that blood pumping! Not a morning person? TOO BAD. THE ONLY THING THAT GIVES MORE ENERGY THAN EXERCISE IS THE NUTRIENTS IN A WELL COOKED MEAL AND IF YOU'RE GOING TO EAT YOUR WEIGHT IN STEAK YOU BETTER RUN OFF THOSE CALORIES. (Van actually does make very tasty protein shakes too You can't even tell it has kale in it.)

Lastly, positivity. Van faces the world with a smile. The sun will come out tomorrow. Even if the sun in Alaska tends to disappear for months at a time. It's fine. The looming darkness of winter is just another soul-crushing disappointment in life. It's the perfect time to curl into a ball in the pitch black of night and have an existential crisis about how everyone is just pretending to like you and your entire life is a sham and only building towards failure. Emerge in the brief light of dawn and have some pancakes. Pancakes make everything better!

Dragon (Fire)

Van is a fire dragon by birth, and it is a running joke in his family that they cursed him the moment they decided to name him after Vulcan, the God of Fire. Because he is terrible at being a dragon.

He has next to no control over his draken magic. His mom says it will come with time, that he's still only a baby (but I'm 25 Mom means nothing to her) but she's a water dragon married to a Selkie so it's super unfair to make that comparison. She might get things wet. He'll set the whole house on fire. Or the diner. It's especially bad because he has allergies and when he sneezes at work it's all he can do to keep the oven from exploding.

Part of his intense desire for fitness as a Human is because as a dragon he is small (comparatively), gangly, and never knows where is the best place to put his wings and tail in a given location so he's constantly knocking into things. The only safe place for him to be as a dragon is up in the air, flying, where he can spread his wings and chill. He is about 6 FT tall, the size of your average horse, 18ft long and 36 ft wingspan.

He is also… a classic dragon hoarder. Not necessarily for all that glitters and gold, but some of it is glittery or gold or shiny or… you know. Other things are just things that he loves. He tries not to let his stashes get out of control but the side effect of his attempts just mean he has… a lot of small stashes in a lot of places. Namely one of the basement storerooms in the diner and his apartment.

The Plan:

• person A (Kiara) goes down into the basement and finds person B (Van) with their hoard


• Van adds her to the hoard (figuratively in this first case, probably gifts her something in the hoard lol) and calls her 'princess'


• wicked family tries to take the thing she was given (since it be shiny and valuable)

• she escapes from wicked family with Van's help and is staying with Van (moves in with Van/temporarily staying/whatnot)


• more hoard is revealed lol


• the sneeze that almost burns the house down (she doesn't have to be the one to lose her eyebrows though LOL)

• breaks vase and/or other Important Thing with tail during demonstration of dragon form

• con cosplay costume conversation had at some point (except he says she has to dress up as a princess if he's going to be a dragon)
