Isaac was born and raised in Alwick, a sleepy seaside port town. He was orphaned by the time he was 5, with a mother who died in childbirth and a seafaring father whose vessel was lost. Thereafter, he was raised under the care of Landric Kerrigan, an eccentric great-uncle who is a loved (if not exasperatedly tolerated) wizard himself and set Isaac upon his future path.

He served as the old wizard's apprentice for much of his youth between school and other activities, and though the old man was fond of him, he also pointed out quite often how meager and weak Isaac's magical ability appeared to be. Not for lack of trying to make him more impressive -- Isaac endured many experiments from his great-uncle, all done from a place of love, but did nothing to enhance his talents and in fact only lowered his self esteem. Any impressive magical feats tended to come in bursts of wild, uncontrolled magic, and otherwise he was only capable of weak feats.

It was with some relief that he moved out as soon as he could into the ramshackle home of 4 of his friends, the five of them attending the local Magician's Academy for continuing education and managing to keep the leaky old roof from caving in on them. This existence, while vastly more poor as the five of them have to work for food and rent around school, is a much happier one for Isaac, and he loves his rooms that he fills with his passion projects of plants and flowers, as he intends to go for a focus in potion crafting and medicines since his magical ability is so low.

He picked up Cate not long after moving in, discovering the familiar spirit animal abandoned and seemingly without a master, and took her in as his own. He loves her as a parent loves a child, often taking care of her more than he takes of himself.
