Was born in a small village in Tanzania, Africa. Very isolated where the Karam family decided they needed to look after themselves and not worry about anyone else. Adela, her twin sister, and her brother were put through hell trying to take care of themselves. Once their mother died of suspicious circumstance (aka Adela's father killed her), Adela was scared of what her father might do to the rest of her family so she killed him with a dagger she stole from the local marketplace. After that her and her sister moved around, smuggling and stealing food to survive. They never settled down and slowly grew their criminal records until the cops closed in. The sisters were separated and Adela decided to move across seas, distancing herself from the police as much as possible.

Has only killed three people in her life: her father, a police officer, and eventually one other person in the end of her story. She's mostly running from the aftermath of her killings, and struggles to fit in everywhere. She constantly looks over her shoulder in case someone's watching her. Her paranoia leads to insomnia and severe sleep deprivation. She doesn't eats too little to be healthy and is too small to be considered healthy.

Adela and her twin sister (Ana) were caught by the police. The two of them were running when Adela accidentally killed a police officer she got into a fight with. Ana told her to run and she did, all the way to America. She never looked back, and was ashamed that her fear and selfishness kept her from going back for her sister. In a large city she lived on the streets for a few months before a man named Ollie took her in. He enrolled her in school and helped her disappear from her past life. After high school she went to college with her best friends and the three of them lived together in an apartment. The books takes place during their senior year of college.
