Koori Holt is one of the two great-granddaughters of the famous Drake Holt, the first Emperor of New Rome. Koori was originally the Crowned Princess but passed that title to her younger sister, August. The reason for this being that Koori was born with a strange magical affliction.
This affliction was her magic itself. While magic manifesting in a witch at birth was certainly not unheard of, it remained a rarity. Furthermore, it attempted to encase Koori's heart in ice. The doctors knew that if Koori's heart was fully encased, she would die. They called upon Koori's great-grandfather, Drake Holt, for help. His knowledge of magic was near peerless. Using all the knoweldge and power he had available to him, he managed to save baby Koori from cetain death. But it was only a seal. He could not break the curse. Instead, he sealed as much as he could away, allowed Koori to live a mostly comfortable life.
