Humanity has been through dark time after dark time after dark time. Finally, when there's a little hope, the government locks the last of the population in an insane asylum where they are living in Virtual Reality. All the memories and history of the bad things have been overwritten. Nobody can even talk about the idea of VR or their memories will be overwritten. If it goes too far, they will be killed.
