Overview
Born to Be Yours
In this futuristic world, everyone has the first name of their soulmate inscribed on their arm at birth. People tend to only date those possessing the name on their arm, but it is impossible to know which is the right one. If you marry your true soulmate, the name on your arm will light up, but if you don't, divorce is prohibited, so you only have one shot at marrying the right person. If your soulmate marries the wrong person, their name will disappear from your arm; those that see this happen unfortunately tend to commit suicide. The success rate of this system is actually very high, but when it goes wrong, it's absolutely terrible...and that's what this story focuses on. It explores the idea of: what happens if you mess up your one shot at getting your soulmate? And what happens if (and this is thought of as impossible, laughably so) the name on your arm is wrong - or if there isn't one at all?
Dystopian/Futuristic Romance (?)
History
Fifty years prior to the start of the story, a new world government took over with a different goal in mind for humanity. Instead of progress in technology and exploring what is out there to be discovered, these authorities focused on something closer to home that is perhaps even rarer: trying to help everyone find true happiness. Happiness was (somewhat incorrectly and blindly) interpreted to mean the finding of true love, so after many hard years of work and experiment, the Soulmate System was discovered and implemented into humanity. True love has flourished since, and this is widely accepted as wonderful. Only a few oddballs wonder if this is really all there is to happiness (these are often the ones who married the wrong people or were born without a soulmate; the latter is extremely rare and are looked down upon as outcasts).
Rules
There's not really any magic to it, just intricately complicated science.
The Soulmate System:
series of thorough scans is performed on each baby as soon as it is born, and a key chromosome in the DNA (commonly dubbed as "the love gene") reveals the first name and an extremely vague, blurry image of the one person in this world that baby will be able to truly love. The baby is then put into a machine called the Inscriber, which harmlessly writes the name of the person's soulmate into the lower part of their left arm, close to their wrist. It's written in a special chemical/mineral blend that corresponds directly with the "love gene" and responds accordingly to the person's choices in the future.
Upon the forming of the new government, almost all focus on technology other than creating and improving the Soulmate System was completely cast aside. It is believed that there is no need to go looking for something more when you can find all that you need here on Earth.
Same as our world.
