It is actually an floating island where the native inhabitants agreed to a peace treaty and were attached to the facility and other continents via mag locks. The explosion actually created earthquakes, tsunamis, monsters, radiation, collapsed buildings, etc. luckily the natives and other C.A.T humans managed to hid underground where they built a new society over the next 500 years or 500 a.e. They also evolved at a bristling pace turning from humans to monstrous beings capable of surviving in the brutal environment, however C.A.T humans stayed the same.
