Superpowers appeared in the world three decades ago. The term 'superhero' appeared at almost the same time. The one who coined it was Richard Grant– an unassuming name for a very powerful man. He was a very rich businessman, as well as one of the first who came forward and admitted he had a superpower. He was the one who suggested the others like him form a group to help the world. And the world rejoiced.
That brings us to the present. It was only too late that 'the world' was revealed to be 'the rich'. Those at the bottom of society only suffered from this superhero alliance. They were unfairly targeted, even more likely to be arrested than actual supervillains (Richard Grant came up with that name too). Green was one of those rejects, except she had a secret. She too had a superpower. It was a dangerous thing to have, especially for someone who hated superheroes. They would take anyone suspected of having powers and try to add them to the alliance. If that didn't work, they would disappear. She wanted nothing to do with that. Green had been quite successful with avoiding superheroes and keeping her powers a secret… at least until the incident at the grocery store. She did what she had to do– there were never any superheroes in this area. Unfortunately for her, the daughter of Richard Grant was there undercover on an assignment… and saw her.

Appearance: 5'6" tall with medium brown skin. Hair is dyed mint green and falls to her chest when down. She usually puts it in two buns or braids. Her eyes are grey with just a hint of green to them. Her ears are pierced, and she has a septum piercing as well as a left nose ring. She loves wearing very weird earrings and fun makeup.
Personality: She can be very grumpy and stubborn. With people she likes, she's much nicer. She hates doing extra things, and things being more difficult than they have to be. She's very snarky and sarcastic.
Likes: Peace and quiet, Mexican food, pretty rocks, hot beverages.
Dislikes: Things being difficult, getting bothered, superheroes, property damage.
Talents: She's very good at making tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.
Powers: She can see, communicate with, and control ghosts. She also attracts them, which she isn't such a big fan of.
Background: Green has lived in this city all her life. Her parents were advocates for more rules and regulations for superheroes, and she grew up with that belief as well. She went to school and managed to graduate high school, but college was too expensive for her, so she started working instead. She had a variety of jobs and finally settled on working in a coffee shop near her parent's apartment where she also lived. She was 20 when her parents were killed at a demonstration protesting the dismissal of a bill that would have put more rules in place for superheroes. A super villain allegedly attacked them, but she was convinced it was the superheroes' doing.
Other: She has a lot of pets, and all of them are dead. She has never been able to find her parent's ghosts.

In publicity/marketing campaigns, her outfits are always white with silver accents. She has a tattoo of angel wings covering her entire upper back and shoulders.
Personality: Her 'celebrity' persona is that of a confident, charismatic young woman. She makes light-hearted jokes and is known for winning over the media with her smile and persuasion. Off camera she is quite cold and business-like. She is resistant to opening up to people, but once she does so she is extremely protective and caring.

Dislikes: Tabloids, mentions of her mother, entitled people, insects
Talents: She speaks English, Spanish, French, and German fluently, plays the piano, and is well learned in martial arts.

Background: Ariane, birth name Chase, was raised in a very sheltered environment. She was homeschooled until high school and had always had trouble making friends. She attended an unnamed university and graduated at 22. Her mother is a sensitive spot with her: she disappeared when Ariane was six and left her heartbroken because they had been so close. She discovered her gender identity at the age of thirteen and quickly and efficiently went through the medical reassignment process; despite her and her father having a strained relationship ever since her mother left, he still respected her enough to pay for her HRT and top surgery.
Other: She has a high pain tolerance.

(Sorry this is so long… I got a little carried away. :)
Green was out of milk. Milk only, but she'd somehow also added a bar of chocolate and a container of strawberries to her list as well. Well, it happened. She had enough money to cover the extra costs, anyway, and that didn't happen every day. She deserved it. Green was heading towards the front of the store when a large crash sounded in that direction. There was a moment of perfect silence, followed by screaming. The building rocked slightly, a second crashing sound coming from the front. Green took a step towards it but stopped before she got much farther. From where she was, all that she could see of the front of the store was a dust cloud. There were people stumbling out of it, the sounds of panic following them. Oh, gods. Her first thought was that a superhero had wandered into this area chasing a villain and, as per usual, showed zero regard for the area while trying to stop them.
That thought was swiftly forgotten when the source of the destruction appeared. The dust was settling slowly, creating a very cinematic reveal of a very large, very human-looking ghost. Green's eyes widened slightly at the sight– after all, in her experience, the human ghosts that actually looked like ghosts were the most powerful and destructive. And the fact that it was that big… it would bring this place down in the blink of an eye.
"This is the Ghost King's doing!" Someone shouted, waving at the thing in a panic. Ah, so everyone else could see it too. Wonderful. Green glanced around the store, but no one was making any sort of movement towards the thing. Because of where they were, too, it was unlikely anyone with the power to stop this thing would be there. That also meant that if she did anything, there were no superheroes to see her and take her away. She really, really didn't want to make a move, but if she didn't, she and everyone else in that store would die. Well, here went nothing. Green quickly pulled a pair of sunglasses out of her backpack, pulling her hat lower onto her head. It was a terrible disguise, but it would do.
"Hey!" Green shouted, marching towards the ghost. "What's your name?" To anyone else, these first words would probably seem like the most stupid way to approach a very angry ghost, but remembering a name usually helped the ghost calm down a little. The ghost turned towards her, face appearing vaguely confused now. It was probably wondering why the hell anyone was talking to it.
"Kevin." The ghost responded after a few beats. At the same time, the fingers on its left hand lost their detail.
"Alright, Kevin. Why don't we take a few seconds to calm down. Why are you here?"
"I… uh… I don't know. Someone told me he would be here." Ghost Kevin's face drooped into a pout. "He's not, though."
"No. So why don't you just… shrink down a little," Green made a shrinking motion with her fingers, "and find somewhere else to hang around?" She stared at the ghost, mentally willing it to leave the sight of the other people in the store. The sooner she dealt with this, the sooner she could get out of there.

Ariane hated undercover assignments. Her appearance's uniqueness almost always got her close to being given away. Today, she wore an oversized gray hoodie and shorts, with her hair tied in a half-ponytail. She had been in an alley behind a small food mart, smoking a cigarette and watching people walk by from the corner of her eye, when she heard the crash.
She perked up, only to hear a second blast, and pulled her hood more securely over her face before using the clouds of dust and drywall to sneak to the front of the store to view the source of the commotion. At the sight of the ghost, her expression shifted to one of contained surprise, and she ducked behind a half-smashed wall. She'd never seen a ghost in person before. Now out of sight, she focused solely on listening, as that was what had added to her surprise: someone was talking to it.
Ariane peeked around the edge of the wall again to find out if she could get to a better vantage point without being seen. Damn. There were people in both back corners of the space. Her searching gaze fell on the person talking to the ghost, and she raised an eyebrow. A woman her age, in a snapback and sunglasses, with spring green hair. She didn't know any mediums in the alliance, green hair or no. Mediumship was a powerful and rare ability; if she were able to recruit this girl, it'd be a big success for the alliance.
She retreated back behind the wall and tapped her fingertips together, thinking. An idea came to her, and Ariane stood and navigated the shadows, discreetly bending the light to her advantage, until she was next to one of the groups of huddling civilians, effectively invisible. Making almost no movement, she pulled a tiny dart pistol out of her waistband and flicked off the safety. She could at least get a tracking chip on the girl, if nothing else.

Kevin the ghost stared at Green, who stared right back at it.
"Shrink," she repeated, making the motion again.
"But… What about him?" Kevin blinked slowly at her.
"He's not here." Green sighed. She didn't exactly know who this "he" was, but she could guess. Nine times out if ten, the one the ghosts were holding grudges against was the man who had created that stupid superhero alliance. After all, he was the one who'd set the rules for superheroes. The rules that fully neglected to protect regular people. "I promise you'll feel much better if you let go of all that, alright?" Kevin stared at her a little longer, then let out a sighing sound. As it did, the ghost started to shrink and simplify, becoming a little blob with tiny legs and arms. A second later, it disappeared from the sight of the regular people. Green let out a sigh of relief and beckoned the ghost over. "Come here. I'll take you somewhere better, alright?" Kevin bobbed around in a happy manner and settled down on her shoulder. Green smiled at it, then glanced around at the rest of the store. Everyone was staring at her in shock, and for good reason. After all, she hadn't made the situation worse like a typical superhero would have done. Green desperately wanted to tell them that she wasn't one of them, but that would be too dangerous. Instead, she headed towards the exit as quickly as she could. She needed to get home and lay low for a few days, just in case a superhero noticed this incident. And she should probably not go to this store again. Just in case.

In one swift movement, Ariane aimed and fired a miniscule dart at the girl's ankle as she hurried towards the automatic doors of the supermarket. She stayed where she was until the rest of the people gained their bearings and began leaving the premises, and then briskly left, turning a few corners out in the street before making sure she was alone, summoning her wings, and taking flight.
From above, Ariane could spot the mystery woman's bright hair easily, and, manipulating the light so as not to cast a shadow, she proceeded to follow her. Normally by now she would have had to call this into her fellow higher-ups, but Ariane was intrigued enough to continue this newfound case without alerting the alliance. This was her discovery. No one else needed to know about it yet.

Green didn't notice anything different. She was too busy making plans for the next few days. She hadn't gotten her milk thanks to Kevin, but she could do without for the time being. Milk wasn't worth getting captured by the superheroes. Green was trying to act normal, but Kevin was making it very difficult. It kept bouncing from one shoulder to the other, through her head at that, and squeaking. Like a dog toy being stepped on. Making those sounds was entirely unnecessary. She was sure it was just doing that to annoy her. Green tried to very casually grab Kevin, but it evaded her grasp and kept bouncing.
"Stop it," She hissed, swiping at Kevin again. It made a sad squeak and finally obeyed. Green shook her head, already dreading the days to come. If Kevin didn't move on soon, she might end up killing it again. Thankfully her apartment wasn't that far from the store, so she didn't have to act normal for very long. As soon as the door to her apartment closed, she shooed Kevin off her shoulder and gave it a hard look. "Listen, I have some rules around here. No going through things like people or walls or furniture. No messing with me or my things. Don't make noise unless there's a gods-damned robber or murderer in here." She paused. "Oh, and you're free to go anytime you like, as long as the place you're going is the afterlife." Kevin visibly wilted.
"I can't go there. Uma will get the job if I do." Green stared at the ghost, her hand clenching into a fist.
"Is Uma rich? Does she come from a very wealthy family who pays for everything? Is she qualified for this job? Does she deserve it?"
"Uh… she's not rich. I guess she deserves it. But I really want it." Kevin whined, weaving back and forth in front of Green.
"Well, you're dead. You can't get the job if you're dead. Now get out of here! Git!" Green waved her hands at Kevin in a rather complicated pattern. It probably wasn't necessary, but it always seemed to get the ghosts to leave in a speedy manner. Kevin made one last squeaking sound and disappeared into a puff of white. From what she'd seen so far, that meant it had moved on. Perfect. Green let out a very long, heavy sigh and flopped into her favorite armchair. It hadn't been necessary to send it to the afterlife, but it seemed like a very annoying roommate.

In the following few days, Ariane stayed holed up in her office space, staring at her computer, listening. There was nothing interesting or useful she could glean from the medium girl's dialogue, if she spoke at all. She appeared to live alone, making information hard to access. Ariane knew she would have to either go out again or admit that she wasn't going to get any further in her endeavor. It frustrated her. On day three, running on one total hour of sleep since the event, she dressed once again in inconspicuous clothing and took to the sky somewhat unsteadily, keeping an eye on the screen of her phone to make sure the little blue dot that was the mystery girl didn't move.
Ariane arrived twenty minutes later at the girl's apartment. She had intended on settling on the roof of the neighboring building to watch, but sleep deprivation had other plans. Instead of making a graceful touchdown, she dipped out of the sky too late, hurtling towards the small road between the two buildings, and landed on her back on the ground. She heard a vicious crack in one of her wings and a wave of sharp pain engulfed her entire right shoulder. "Shit," she muttered to herself, before her vision was engulfed in black.

Green had spent the past few days sitting in her chair and consuming unhealthy amounts of tea. Nothing of note happened outside, which she figured out from both watching the news and the lack of new ghosts appearing in her apartment. It was boring, in other words. In order to alleviate this boredom, Green read a lot. She also tried to look into the appearance of the ghost, but couldn't find anything except for other attacks linked to someone called 'the Ghost King'. Probably a villain, given the name and the actions. Anyone with powers was just no good. They either committed to evil wholeheartedly or pretended to be good. Green couldn't figure out which one was worse. Probably the second one, honestly.
On the third day, Green had had enough. Things had probably blown over enough that she would be able to go outside. In disguise, of course. That meant a hat and sunglasses again. At least it was sunny out. She had a reason for this outfit. All she was doing was going down the street for a sandwich. It wasn't that dangerous. Still, Green took the back door. If someone was watching, they didn't need to know which building she'd come out of. She probably should have been paying better attention, but Albie and its group had insisted on coming with her 'just in case'. Because she was paying much more attention to the unruly ghosts than what was in front of her, she almost stepped on the person blocking the alley between her building and the next one over.
"Agh, gods!" Green yelped, jumping back. "Why didn't any of you warn me there was–" Her eyes locked onto the wings this person possessed. "Shit, a superhero. That's worse! Oh, my gods!" She took a couple of steps back, eyes wide. This was bad. What was a superhero doing right next to her place? Had they figured it out already? She had to get out of there. Hide. Something. Green spun around and started walking away as fast as she could without running. Hurt or not, there was no way she was helping one of them. They hadn't earned that right yet.

Ariane regained consciousness some hours after the super she now called Medium Girl had discovered her; she didn't know of this immediately, though, until she rolled over on her left side, ignoring the pain in her wing, and saw footprints towards her and then away in the thin layer of ash and mud covering the ground of the alley. Her heart jumped and she fished her phone out of the pocket in her jacket.
The screen was shattered, and the bottom third would only glow white, but it still worked enough to show her where the girl was: six blocks away, meandering in a seemingly meaningless fashion. A somewhat delayed reaction, Ariane's heart jumped again: Medium Girl was no longer oblivious. "Man, fuck," she groaned, her voice cracking. This development made it all so much more difficult. She considered dropping the case, as it had already caused her much more discomfort and inconvenience than usual, but Medium Girl felt, weirdly, more personal than the rest of them. She decided to attempt following on foot.
There were several obstacles in this endeavor. First, since one of Ariane's wings was broken, she couldn't hide them. Anyone who saw her would instantly know she was a super, not to mention her identity. She'd be on the front cover of every tabloid and the topic of a thousand internet threads before she could even get a word out of her mouth. Second, even if the pain didn't bother her, it significantly restricted her light bending abilities. She would have trouble passing under people's radar. A tall girl with bloody, dirt-matted angel wings staggering around the middle district in the late afternoon isn't easy to ignore.
Nonetheless, Ariane inched towards the Dumpster in the alley, used it to pull herself to her feet, and began her quest.

Since the super-hazard had been right outside her apartment, Green guessed that it wasn't safe there anymore. At least for the time being. Gods, if it turned out she could never go back to that apartment because of that stupid ghost and those stupid superheroes… she didn't know what she'd do. That was her parent's apartment, and staying in it made her feel closer to them. Green grabbed a few things, stuffed them in a backpack, and left. This city was big– if she wandered around enough, she could probably lose them. Probably. She had no idea what tricks the supers had up their sleeves, however, which made planning a little difficult. Gods, why couldn't they just let people with powers be? Green let out a frustrated sigh and looked around for a street sign. She'd been walking without paying attention to where she was going– something that she really needed to stop doing. It looked like she was about six blocks away from her apartment. She really had been walking in circles. It was getting really hot now. Green groaned and headed towards the nearest shaded bench. She pulled a water bottle out of her backpack and drank a few sips. She could probably sit there for a little. Just a little, and then she could keep doing circles through the city.

Medium Girl and Ariane, blue and red dots, were pulsing on the glowing, fractured map not ten feet away from each other. Despite the pain and fatigue, Ariane felt exhilarated with adrenaline. Until she patted her pockets and came to the realization that the multiple forms of tranquilizers she had brought with her had either disappeared during her turbulent flight or been smashed and rendered useless. She sighed, frustrated, and spat, "Fucking hell."
Immediately after the expletive left her mouth, she slapped a dirty hand over it. Too loud. The alley she was in didn't work in her favor, either: it was practically empty, so her voice echoed uncomfortably. Her heart leapt into her throat and she looked up at the gray sky, biting the inside of her cheek and internally cursing her own thoughtlessness.

Green sighed and shoved her water bottle back into her backpack. She should probably– a sound somewhere near her caused her to freeze. It sounded like someone cursing. It could be nothing.
"Alert–" One of the ghosts, named Albie, started to shout. Green waved her hand through the little ghost, stopping whatever else it was going to say. Nothing else came from that direction, but she was curious. The ghosts were all flitting about rather worriedly, but Green still stood up and walked towards the noise slowly. Hopefully, it would only be some random person and not a superhero. Gods, if it was a super, she was screwed. And stupid. If she was lucky, she could probably have the ghosts help her get out of there. If not… well. She would get there when she got there. Green turned the corner of the alley and peered into it. Gods, please let it just be a normal person…

A wave of fatigue washed over Ariane and, eyes closed, she slid down the wall of the building to sit on the ground. When she looked back up, the bench that Medium Girl had been sitting on was empty. She feebly hit the wall with a grimy fist; she had to accept that this was over. Heaving a sigh, she put her head in her hands and let her hair fall in front of it.
The soft sound of feet shuffling in front of her jerked Ariane out of her trance - she looked up, and there, standing in front of her, was a silhouette. Long hair, snapback: Medium Girl. She sighed and put her hands up, rolling her eyes, and said in a crackly voice, "Well, looks like you got me." Ariane tasted blood in her mouth; she must have bitten her cheek harder than she'd thought. She spat a wad of bloody spit on the ground next to her before returning her gaze to the silhouette.

Green stared at the woman in the alley. She had wings. Shit. Green took a step back, heart pounding in her chest. A second glance, however, calmed her slightly. This super looked hurt. She probably wouldn't be able to chase after Green if she made a break for it.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Green asked, narrowing her eyes at the woman. She could make a guess for what she was there for, but she wanted to hear it. Just in case. There was no need to let a totally unrelated superhero know that she was someone they wanted. "If you're fighting one of those so-called supervillains, I respectfully ask that you get the hell out of here before you kill more people." Well, there went acting civilly to her. Green couldn't help it. Those supers made her so mad.
"You're a dumbass," Albie commented from behind her. "Just leave. She knows who you are. And if she doesn't, still leave. Leave!" All the ghosts made sounds of agreement, then started chanting 'leave' as loudly as they could. Green resisted the urge to fight them and instead turned to leave. They were right. Crossing paths with a superhero was bad, no matter if they knew her or not. "Well, see you never. I'm late."

Ariane made to answer but found herself at a loss for words. She could hear her heartbeat in her ears. At this point she didn't think she'd get this far. What was she even going to say to Medium Girl as a backup plan if she needed it? She cursed herself for being so careless, but before she could get a word out the girl turned on her heel and started to walk away. Before she could think twice, Ariane called out sourly, "Hey, hey, hey, hold on, where do you think you're going? I can't have gone this far only for you to dip just like that." She shut her eyes against another wave of pain and exhaustion, spat another glob of blood, and wiped her mouth on the back of her hand, leaving a smear of dirt across her cheek.

Green was not late. She just needed to get out of there. After only a couple of steps, the super shouted after her. Oh, she definitely knew who Green was. Still, Green couldn't help herself.
"Right, you think I'm just going to stick around long enough for you to arrest me for something stupid?" Green turned back around, causing a wave of exclamations to wash through the ghosts. "Or let me guess. You need help because you decided to tangle with a villain too powerful for you." Green did a once-over of the woman. She looked absolutely terrible. For a second, Green felt a little bad for her. Something had happened, and it was probably no fun to feel like that. But this was a superhero. They had never tried to help people like her when they were dying, let alone hurt. She shouldn't help her either.

Ariane scoffed and winced at the pain it caused. Had she bruised a rib on top of breaking her wing? "I'm not going to arrest you. Not anymore, at least. And I don't fight villains like they do. Do you even recognize me?" She stopped for a moment after asking this and thought. Considering that Ariane's hands were completely covered in grime, her face was probably not much easier to match with that of her public persona. Angel Grant was nowhere to be found here. Ariane tried to stand, but couldn't push herself up past a crouch; the pain didn't even bother her, but it had drained all of her energy. She sat back down in defeat and glared up at Medium Girl.

(You're good! And just letting you know, I'm visiting family next week, so I'll probably be replying slowly, if at all.)
"Oh, I see. You were going to arrest me. What changed your mind?" Green crossed her arms and smirked. "Is it because you aren't able to?" At the woman's question, Green stepped back slightly and inspected her closely. She didn't look very familiar. If not for the wings, she might have just looked like an ordinary person. "No, I don't. Who are you? It's a bold claim to be a superhero and not fight villains in the most destructive way possible. To us, that is. For you, I bet it doesn't cost you a penny. You can just spout some nonsense about protecting the greater good and pretend a building full of 'disposable' people is a loss you can accept." Her words were sharp and venomous, full of anger. If she had a superhero in front of her that couldn't do anything to her, she might as well let them know what she thought of them. The ghosts had started swirling around her, and some had started looking more like people. Apparently, they were really worried about her. That was sweet, and the least they could do considering how much trouble they caused.
