Aro/Ace Characters??

So I have a female character that I'm thinking is going to be Aro/Ace, and I have a question for Aro/Ace people…actually multiple questions. I'm going to be honest and admit that I don't actually know that much about Aro/Ace, since I'm not myself. So I hope none of these questions are offensive to anyone

  1. Let's say there's a rather attractive person that other people in the group are saying is attractive. Would the Aro/Ace character also find that person attractive, or be able to see that yes, they were attractive, or would that not even register or something?
  2. What's the best way to insinuate they're Aro/Ace without saying it outright? Because it's a sci-fi/fantasy story, so idk if they have a term for Aro/Ace
  3. How would they most likely respond to people flirting/hitting on them?

I don't know about others, but this is my take as an aromantic. (Asexual is still kind of up in the air.)

  1. Yes, they would be able to see that the person is attractive. Though it's more of I can respect that they are good looking even though I don't find them attracting to me.

  2. I would say indicate that they have no intentions for romantic or sexual relationships. Some Aro/Aces are repulsed by seeing and/or thinking about romantic/sexual acts so if you want to have your character be that go for it. It would make it clearer that this character is not into that kind of stuff.

  3. Personally, I take it as a compliment or just outright reject saying I'm not into people like that. But that's just me.

also it does depend on how they feel about romantic or sexual stuff. Some aces are completely grossed out by even the thought of sex or being sexually attracted to someone, some dont care at all, and some aces are ok with having sex, they just arent attracted to anyone in that way.
I assume the same goes for aromantics too, but i'm not aro so i cant say for sure lol

  1. Yes, but in an aesthetic way. Like how a lesbian can point out that a man looks good without being attracted to him. As one good quote that I saw said, "I'm gay, not blind." (Just swap out gay with aro obviously)
  2. Like others have said, aromanticism and asexuality are spectrums, so it differs from person to person. They might say something like "oh, I've never really felt like that around anyone" or "I'm not really into that relationship stuff". They might also be sex/romance repulsed.
  3. Again, depends on the character. Some might laugh, some might reject them point-blank/bluntly, some might try and explain that they're aro-ace, etc.

I'm asexual but not aromantic, so take these all with a grain of salt

Speaking from a personal perspective, I'm very ace but I would love to be in a platonic/romantic relationship someday! I've never had someone flirt with me but if they did I think I'd mostly panic and then fumble the interaction completely lol.
As for showing that your character is ace/aro, I feel like it could either come up in casual conversation with friends, or someone could hit on them and they have to explain (like the folks above were saying), or maybe one friend knows and valiantly defends them from the romantic advances of others?? Just some thoughts anyway XD

Ahh thank you all for the input!! So what if the character was like…ace but not aro like some of y'all? How would that like…affect their relationship with a potential SO? Also I'm really sorry if any of my questions are offensive or rude, I don't mean them to be

I have a character that's ace but still in a relationship. My take on it was smth like, its a normal relationship but minus the sexual details. Just a very powerful emotional bond, with no desire for intercourse

Hmm makes sense. I read a book with a lesbian ace character once where like…she felt very strongly for the other person, but she didn't even want to kiss them? Is that an extreme end of the spectrum, or would that be normal?

Ik this has already been answered, but it would depend. Some people would be flattered, some might be slightly repulsed, and some might not even notice. Or some weird combination. It all depends

Everyone has said most of it but I want to add that if you want to make it clear they are aroace without using the term you can give them romance repulsion, which would mean they'd be uncomfortable with people hitting on them, talking about their significant others or PDA

I know I'm super late, but I'm aro/ace and personally:
1: No, I just get confused when people do that. Like, what is it about that person? I don't get it.
2: Maybe state they were never interested in romance and never found anybody attractive? Or maybe your world just does have a term, I mean why can't it?
3: Oh, I probably would not notice unless they just said it outright, and then just 'no' them.
