Fighting Sci-fi cliches

Hi!
So i'm working on a Sci-fi story and I was wondering if anyone would point out some cliches from other stories in the genre.
Thank You!

Or things you notice that most Sci-Fi stories have in common.

I'd make sure that you do kill enough characters to make the antagonist seem dangerous. Main characters too, most sci-fi novels only kill extras.

Okay thanks! That's a thought.

Also, what are some things you like most in Sci-Fi stories?
I love the variety of aliens and planets. :)

Marie

Same, do you count dystopian fiction as Sci-fi?

Sure, though I prefer space Sci-Fi.

@kingeridan

Sometimes cliche is good. And plus you can give it an eerie retro feel with classic space ships and aliens

True!

HeavyDuty

try puting some subtle references to classic sci-fi shows/movies

Never enough weaponry (lazer guns, shields, cannons.) Usually the more primitive the more interesting.
I.E. sword = Lightsaber

Any kind of fast-travel system in space.
I feel this is a cliche that has a ton of potential but is always simplified to "It takes you anywhere unless the plot finds it inconvenient".
