I want to make a mute Oc, what are the dos and don'ts so I don't end up offending anyone?

My Oc is Atisuto, and she is mute. I need some help on what is realistic for somone who is mute if that makes sense. And also what could cause a person to go mute. Thanks in advance!

I mean, she could use sign language to talk to people, even though she can still hear them.
