(The basic idea here is a friends to enemies to lovers type situation with a whole lot of angst / fluff in-between. For more intricate/specific details on plot, just ask. Rated MA for the possibility of extreme violence and other such materials.)

You find yourself on one side of a war with someone you could once call your friend standing on the opposite end from you. Your difference in beliefs has left the two of you estranged, seemingly in a state of permanence with no hope of reconciliation. Although the two of you may cross paths every now and again, your interactions are almost always fated to end in conflict with no clear winner ever declared by its conclusion. However, try as you might, no matter how deeply you may deny it, something within your soul stops you from killing her at every given opportunity.

And it's driving you crazy.

For context, there are two kingdoms from which these two characters hail from, respectively. One kingdom (Kingdom A, for now) believes that by seizing control of the other kingdom (Kingdom B), it will allow for a more united nation between two peoples under one ruler, providing a broader pool of resources for their combined nations. However, Kingdom B opposes this, having no interest in the prospect of abandoning their current ruler to serve under another while losing a fraction of their freedom alongside it. It is through this dispute that the kingdoms disagreement eventually evolved into war, placing the two characters right between the thick of it.

How a plateau teeming with opposing enemy forces that all sought her destruction could somehow feel more welcoming than the environment she was currently faced with was beyond her. Sneaking about wasn't exactly Phae's strong suit, for she lacked subtlety in this way, but the waging war demanded compromise from all peoples involved, even if it meant stretching outside her comfort zone. Her squadron had made her task very clear - sneak into enemy lines and gather whatever intel possible, regarding the next stage of their attack and when it would be mounted. Simple in theory, yet the task itself left her feeling mildly uneasy, knowing the risks that came with such a mission. As the leaves lighly crunched against her feet, each step placed as though she was wading through a field of glass, she came to a screeching halt in her tracks, clutching her rapier close to her side as she glanced around the area, eyes and ears both deeply focused upon even the slightest shift in her surroundings.

Xena Blair yawned and leaned against a tree. Being told to go do patrol was one thing, but being told to go take two trainees and teach them the basics of patrolling was just an insult to her position. She groaned and took a sip of water before closing her eyes. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she opened her eyes and smiled, ready to get back to work.

Hearing a barely supressed yawn further down from her right, Phae flinched in place, her grip on the hilt of her weapon tightening. The possibility that her enemy was tired should have relieved her, but the realization that she no longer stood alone in the forest only succeeded in putting her nerves further on edge. Her movements quiet, she slowly advanced towards the source of the noise, swiftly ducking behind the cover of a tree trunk when she noticed a figure ahead, casually perched by a tree. There was something strangely familiar about the person that she couldn't quite yet place at her current distance, but if there was one thing she was certain of, they were alone. Or, at the very least, alone, at this moment in time.

Xena picked up her bow again and walked over to her post, a few meters away from where she was. Stretching, she grabbed her quiver and started to study the forest again.

It didn't seem her cover was blown as of yet. Seeming that the figure was going about their time as usual, she reasoned it was safe enough to proceed forward, following the figure close enough behind not to lose sight of them while still maintaining a reasonable distance between them. It was around this point, closely stalking the enemy from behind, that she realized the figure was female, which only added into the strange feeling of déjà vu. Suddenly, a sharp crack resounded through the atmosphere as her heel came to snap against a stray twig in the path.

Xena shot an arrow quickly and walked closer "who goes there?!" She growled loudly. She put her hood up and walked into the treeline, aiming her bow at whatever intruders there were. Looking at the person, she gasped "you!"

The wind whistled fiercely in the swift passage of a stray enemy arrow, the noise serving as a clear telling that her cover was now blown, leaving her position known and exposed to the figure. She barely had the time to react in retaliation to the attack, before a familiar voice caught her by surprise, causing her hand, weighted by the strength of her rapier, to pause in place. "Oh," Phae breathed out, the realization of who stood before her washing over her, evident in the way her expression marred from an agape look of fright into a disappointed frown. "-it's you."

"I see now." She said simply "what are you doing here Phae?" She asked thirdly. Doing a 7 hour shift was tiring when nothing important happens

Despite the fact the two were currently engaged in.. - well, it was the closest thing to a civil conversation they had in a while - she still kept her wits about her, her innate caution keeping her hand readied over her rapier, just in case the situation turned sour. "Helping my kingdom. Not that it's any business of yours, Xena." She answered with as little detail possible, expending only what would sate her former friend's curiosity without spilling too much. "And you're still bowing down blindly to yours?"

"HAH! Not blindly unlike some people phae." She sighed and drew her staff "move, you're under arrest." She growled

A scoff of disbelief escaped her throat, her shoulders jumping slightly as she resisted the urge to laugh. "Arrest? I was under the impression your lot was the type to maim prisoners." Phae shook her head as she drew her sword upward, acknowledging that their brief discussion had paved a short path. Her grip upon her weapon's handle remained both strong and unrelenting, just the same as her spirit. "Either way, I've got business here. And you're in my way."

"Whered you hear that foolishness? We dont harm our prisoners. I myself am in charge of interrogation and you know I despise torture." She also grasped her staff tightly "I'm sorry, but orders are orders and you shall not pass!" She said, and jabbed forward with her staff

"But you'd sooner deny them the freedom they have to state their case? Unless they're a benefit to your cause." Phae combatted in turn, quickly flicking the thin edge of her rapier against the side of her opponent's staff in an effort to redirect its current course from her. "After all, what good would they be to you dead? That's what you intend to do with me, isn't it?"
