New feature: Documents

About a year ago, someone suggested just throwing a text box somewhere to serve as a scratchpad for random ideas they wanted to sort out. Since then, Notebook.ai's had a simple text box dubbed the Scratchpad that allowed anyone to write as little as much text as they wanted, and always have a space to keep whatever they wanted.

Today that little Scratchpad grew up into Documents. If you had anything in your Scratchpad, you'll see a new document named Scratchpad. Now, you can create as many additional documents as you'd like, and if you highlight any text in the document you'll find it supports all sorts of formatting options for you as well. :)

Documents autosave as you write, and can also have titles.

Documents are available to all users. You can create as many documents as you'd like, and they can be as long as you'd like. Well, technically the database will limit documents to an absurdly high 178,956,970 words, or about 894,784 pages. But, please, do not test that! :P

To check it out, click "Documents" in your sidebar. I'd love to get your feedback on how to improve Documents over time.

Some features on the V2 agenda, in no particular order:

  • Inline image uploads for documents
  • Reordering documents in your Documents list / searching for documents
  • Sharing functionality (I'd like to allow users to change the document's privacy like any other notebook page)
  • Being able to link documents to universes just like other pages

This looks amazing! I’ve already sorted what was in my old Scratchpad into several different documents - being able to be more organised is going to help me a lot. Thank you so much for implementing this feature!

This looks awesome! Thank you so much!

I really like this update! Especially since it's free for all. Is there a way to open up a read-only version of the documents? Right now, the only way to read the full length version is to hit edit.

@NobleWolf Thanks! There's not yet a way to open a read-only version, but that doesn't seem too bad to code – I'll make sure it gets included soon. :)

I love this update. It helps me store a LOT of information I have in my huge Universe (it’s called the Motherboard for a reason, people!). Lol, sorry. I’m really nerding out about the unlimited documents non-premium users can make too. I think it’s a great step to a great website (though it is already wonderful)!

Cheers andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)! Keep up the great, fantastic work!

Hi andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)! Would it be possible to add a link to the scratchpad/documents page on mobile, much like the ‘Universes’ and ‘Characters’ links on notebook.ai/my/content ?

EDIT: A user has helpfully pointed out that swiping left brings up the sidebar on mobile, which I hadn’t realised, but this doesn’t appear to work well for iOS devices as swiping left functions as a back button shortcut.
