What do y'all want to see in romantic subplots in stories?
Personally I hate the "bastard boyfriend" trope. Its just so overused and toxic AND not to mention a bad idea of what a relationship is. There is a difference between a "bad boy" and "bastard boyfriend"
Yeah- I honestly hate the cheerleader x football player ones. It's so clique, but almost all high-school romance is. I kinda just want something new, but what is there? Maybe like the main character gets together with someone you don't even know from the book. That'd be different and I think I'd like to see that. So it wouldn't be one of their best friends.

I get sick of how so many stories have 1 or 2 love interests, and it's always obvious who the main character is going to end up with. I think it can be way more interesting to see a character date around, break up, get back together, and/or change their mind about a relationship because it is realistic, especially if the story carries out for a longer period of time. Not every relationship is going to be long lasting or meaningful and that can add a lot of good drama.
Except in a few rare cases, I hate the "love at first sight" trope. Most real relationships aren't like that. I'm a big fan of slow-burn romance <3
I also don't like the "friends-to-lovers" thing. While I know a few people who have had that happen, it's important to show that girls and boys can be just friends. (Marissa Meyer did an excellent job with this with Cinder and Thorne in The Lunar Chronicles!!)
Though, OK, I feel like if you have a boy girl friendship, someone eventually gets a crush on the other. So I want to see one where one of the two gets a crush on the other, but doesn't do anything about it. They keep it secret, and just push those feelings aside. Maybe for not loosing the friendship or just because they don't really know what to do about it.

I like relationships that are sort of power couples. I don't like unbalanced relationships with unequal power. I think people in love who can also work together to solve problems are non-toxic and just overall super badass. Relationships that are like best friends but also lovers. If that makes sense.
What I'm doing for one of my stories is the deuteragonist starts kinda obsessing over the protagonist. It's an innocent obsession, he'll keep his emotion on the back burner, trying to make the protagonist feel better. the protagonist has social anxiety. and the deuteragonist is the protagonist's older brother's best friend. The deuteragonist finds the protagonist so innocent, he remembers what it was like to be innocent, and he kinda obsesses over the idea of innocence and he wants the protagonist to never have to go through the shit he went through. He wants to show the protagonist the world as he wished he could have experienced it.

I get real bothered over those "man finds girl he likes, does everything possible to gain her attention" tropes when taken too far. Getting a nice letter from an anonymous is cute, but waking up to find a dude on your porch with a bundle of roses the size of a small child singing love songs would be pretty darn creepy in real life, especially if you don't know who they are. That and the stalker boyfriend/girlfriend thing. Not having any semblance isn't romantic, its terrifying.
