Sci-fi names

I'm brainstorming a sci-fi series, and I'm really having trouble making up names of place and items that aren't silly sounding.

Have you tried fantasynamegenerator.com? Their names do tend to come out a little silly, but they're easy enough to change as you like.

@kirailove

um… yeah, not really that helpful? I checked out the site and it was… interesting for sure.

You could try https://donjon.bin.sh/scifi/name/#type=space;space=SciFi%20World for some not as silly sounding planet names, along with some other options in the dropdown menus. For items, maybe https://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate.php?Genname=spacephenomena would help? Item names are always tricky to get right.

I've also had this trouble as I'm not in fantasy at all and fantasy names can sound sort of flowery which doesn't fit with a harsher landscape of dystopia or space. I write Dystopian and sometimes even picking objects or concepts as names in our time and world makes for fun names that sound strange since they aren't typically names. For example I have a character named, "Edge" in my story. It's just different enough to sound off to anyone in our world, but just unique enough to be a name in the future or other place. If your story deals with aliens. which I'm not well versed in, then I'm not quite sure this will apply as well. As far as place names go, I heard a trick about Dystopian names of cities that include street signs with letters missing. This is visible in "The 100" on netflix with the city "Polis" coming from the space shuttle "Polaris". Like I said though, this is more dystopian, but hope it helps!

@kirailove

that is actually a great tip!
And thanks for the website mate! I do hope though that the character you named edge isn't too… edgy? ;P sorry, couldn't resist XD

@kirailove Lol he's sooooo edgy

@kirailove

lol XD

@Azuresbend

I've heard this before as a half joke half serious statement that a good way to name sc-fi characters is to stuff your mouth full of food and try and pronounce normal names, which will naturally sound distorted and then write what you hear. For example a name like Alice becomes Allit and Chris to Rift etc. I'm sure if it will be a great help but if anything it will be fun

@kirailove

OMG I need to try this ^
