How do I start writing songs? It’s something I’ve wanted to try for a while but never got to

I usually start with writing down ideas for what I want the song to be like and go from there

It depends on the song. If it's a rap song I do the music first, if not I do the lyrics first.

Does anyone write songs with lyrics? If so, do you go lyrics first, music first, or something else?

It does depend on the song, or if you already had inspiration for the lyrics or not. If not, do music first, then go with it on the lyrics.

Okay, so I love to write lyrics but I literally don't know how to do music. So, yeah. I just don't know what to do about that.

It's like a poem. That's how I start out. But instead of rhyming use almost-rhymes most of the time.

I've only ever finished one song because I am unmotivated and have a short attention span, but I got lots of compliments from the head of the music department and he said that I give a "master class in songwriting" so I'm trying to do it more now.

Okay, so I love to write lyrics but I literally don't know how to do music. So, yeah. I just don't know what to do about that.

I would just just sing the words, it sounds super weird but just sing the words to a random melody. Record 5 versions and pick a favourite, then expand from there. Sometimes it helps to pick some chords to go underneath the music, making sure to carefully pick em to fit the mood of the song (e.g pick happy, simple chords for a happy simple song, probably progressing upwards.). Must kind of use that system of trial and error, except with music you can't really make errors because it's you vision. Also, have you tried rap? If you can write good lyrics sometimes you don't need a tune, just a beat.

It's definitely easier if you do music first in my opinion, if you have a riff or some chords, you can pick lyrics and melodies that will flow well with that.

tbh so am I, the only reason anyone heard that one song I finished was because I had to perform it as it was an assignment. other than that, my songs stay in brief notes in my secret notebook which I have no intention to ever show anyone lol

Maybe, if I get good. But right now I don’t think I have anything to show for my work

@Tiani sry this is super delayed to what you said to me but yeah ive tried rap but i stutter and stuff in general and rapping is a lot like fast talking so its hard for me
I can do more slow stuff like burr, sir from hamilton though

I understand. It’s funny, I can’t talk without making mistakes but give me a beat and I’m the most well spoken person ever lol. It’s not for everyone definitely but if you find what works for you, you’ll be fine
