I'm unsure about ability to make good characters so please just help me build on my stuff

I really like that name! just remember that a character's lack of heritage isn't the only thing that makes a character flat be wary of generic motivations and unrealistic personalities.

Jacob is a neat character. Build a little on motivations and flaws. physical deformities are great and all but personality flaws are good too. as for a last name, he is from Russian decent so a Ru...

perhaps a murder. that might bring in some thriller-esque qualities where the man is trying to lay low while all manner of things crumble. if that's to high stakes perhaps he could get caught up ...
