Sunflower was named that because her mother wanted to name her something special. Normal names for her species are more like Siph, Thys, Phase, ect. Stuff that's a lot easier for a snake-creature to say.
Long story short, it was with the hope that Sunflower could escape the terrible ife her kind live. It didn't work.
