Honestly, if you ask me, it's pretty much impossible to spare someone's feelings in a situation like this. They're bound to be hurt a little even if they are really understanding. So I believe the goal here is to help him understand rather than save his feelings. Tell it to him honestly and don't sugar-coat it. But by no means should you be rude. Just tell him why you changed your mind and leave it at that. You can apologize, though I think it'll do little to soften the blow.

But that's just my advice.

There's no perfect way to do this. It will most likely hurt his feelings any way you go about it. I think it would be best to just rip the baindaid off (tell him asap) instead of letting him get his hopes too high. If you don't, it could hurt him a lot worse.

ok thanks guys,, i hate turning people down bc it always makes me feel bad and i feel like i need a reason besides i don't like the person, but i think the advice helped and i'm going to do my best to not make it a big deal and to be completely honest. i just don't think we're rly compatible and i'll tell him that.
