He is honestly a mix of grown up cynicism and innocent childishness mixed with a more that healthy dose of angst. And he really could not manipulate her at all. She is way more in control of her emotions than he is. It has a little bit of growing up in the story and discovery for him. But he is not exactly the leader in the relationship. It honestly has traces of a first crush to it.
He is far more the child than she is.

I mean he seems ~16. She's legally an adult. As long as you don't make him practically a child (you said more of a child, which, at that age, I assume you meant less mature emotionally), it seems like it would work out.
I mean my boy is going through puberty for a long time and his mind is messed up. Feel sorry for him.
Imagine the mind of a sixteen year old boy. That's him. Except even more… not depressed exactly… but yeah.

I'm personally a big sucker for anything even vaguely "friends to lovers," or "found family." I don't think they're bad tropes, necessarily, but I'm sure there are people out there who think they're overdone.

Main characters that are actually the weakest out of their teammates. I don’t know what it is about that trope but I love it.
Daniella is sort of like that. She has the best power but it is literally impossible to control.
I like that trope too.
It’s just so satisfying to see characters working extremely hard just to reach the same level as the people around them.
It’s also very relatable

I feel like it can be done really well, it just bugs me when it's so obvious that they can't control their powers that you start to wonder why the hell they're in charge of their team (if they're the leader) or allowed to be in combat situations.

(I like it too, but when it's there solely for shock value/"look how eDgY I am" stuff, then it gets annoying. Hell, in all but one of my stories, characters get shot, stabbed, dislocate joints, break bones, beaten up, injured in explosions/fires, etc. One of the MCs breaks his leg early in and is on crutches for most of it, and another (in a completely different story) has a crutch because of a badly healed injury. But it needs a purpose beyond trying to seem mature/edgy.)

also one thing i really hate in books written by cis men is the whole thing they do with describing peeing in uncomfortable detail
"his pee shooting for the stars" is a phrase i actually found. in a crime book. in a published crime book.
