And the longer period of serious mourning is two years.

it seems the issue is death in stories is often treated like The Sims, where the character gets a bad moodlet for like 2 days and it doesn't matter

Yeah, I feel like in a lot of books I've read the grieving process is really rushed. Like someone will die and everyone will be like "Oh no [character] is dead :(" and then in like the next chapter everyone is fine? A lot of times I don't really get all that sad when a character dies and I think a lot of it is because the characters don't really seem to react to it all that much either.

I agree, if a character dies it should have impact, because if all it does is make the others sad for a day, then just injure them instead.

book

And honestly, who does decent injuries? You could do great things with injuries instead of death.

Oh, I injure a lot more characters than I kill…

I should hope so

What can I say? I like making them be in pain.

book

I probably don't do it enough.

I say I’m a jerk to my characters but really I’m nothing compared to what they do to themselves

book

Lol I kind of feel that.

My characters hate be because of the pain I put them through.

I'm fine with having lessons/morals I guess in books… But when authors feel the need to fully shove it in my face, spell it out, and discuss it every scene….. No

Anyone else notice accidental themes in all of your stories?? Because I recently noticed that almost all of mine subconsciously deal with guilt and its effects I don't know how I feel about that…

group
@Pickles group

ah but if it's subconscious you can't slap me with it

Yeah but it slaps me with it every time I try and write about the characters.

plus guilt isn't your own moral beliefs

Bruh, I wasn't even responding to your comment the first time, I was just mentioning a common theme I'd realized in my writing.

And considering that I struggle with feeling guilty over every single thing I do, I would say it does impact my morals, therefore making it a moral belief. Refute me once you've spent 15 minutes crying over insulting a pumpkin patch and two more days stressing over feeling guilty about it, because that's the level of guilt I'm talking about dealing with.

Because the world's falling apart but caramel apples are holding us together
No I'm not okay

Caramel apples with no toppings but nuts (if any toppings at all)

Less right-handed characters…. Like, why does every character have to be right-handed in every freaking book that I've read?????

group
@Starfast group

^Oh my god yes! I'm left handed and I always love finding out when other characters are also left handed. I also always have at least one (but usually more) left handed characters in my story and for some reason even with my right handed characters a lot of times I picture them doing things with their left hand.

I'm left handed as well. Hell, even seeing ambidextrous characters would be nice! It also extends to TV shows/movies.

@The-N-U-T-Cracker

that moment when you realize Spongebob is better with this than almost all other mainstream television

I like this idea but I really don't often see media specifying which hand is dominant for their character. This actually gave me the idea to specify in my stories/character sheets so thanks :)

group
@Becfromthedead group

Yeah, I don’t usually specify unless the character injures an arm, but it can be assumed that my ratio of right to left handed characters is pretty close to real life
