Babe stood, but didn't put her shoes on. "The culdesac with the goose." She said with a laugh, turning to Kai. "Dinner?"
"Rice." Was all Kai said as he stood, linking arms with his sister, who snorted.
Babe stood, but didn't put her shoes on. "The culdesac with the goose." She said with a laugh, turning to Kai. "Dinner?"
"Rice." Was all Kai said as he stood, linking arms with his sister, who snorted.
Henry grinned and headed towards the doors. "Night, Coach!" He called back over his shoulder while he held the door open for Babe and Kai.
Hawk shook his head, waving in response. "Stay outta trouble, you kids! Lookin' at you, Babe."
"Rude!" Babe called back with a laugh, slipping out of the door and tugging Kai along. "Okay, Chinese takeout, and homework."
Henry sighed at the mention of homework. "Chinese first." He got them both in the car and drove around, trying to remember the name of the Chinese place his parents liked.
Babe kicked her feet up on the dashboard, reaching over to nudge Henry with a laugh. "It's easier to just get it done with, Jacobs."
"Says you." Kai said, leaning in between the two front seats. "You were on the verge of expulsion before you got your shit together."
Henry laughed. "I would, I just can't remember where that place is. Kai, is there a story here I haven't heard?"
"There's a million stories you haven't heard." Kai said, shooting Babe a grin. "She was such a slacker, failing all her classes. The school threatened to kick her off the team and expel her, and she decided that was good enough a reason to get on it."
Henry laughed again. "That sounds about right. Between the three of us, if anyone's a slacker here, it's me. Babe's help might be the only thing keeping me on the team."
"You just gotta figure things out." Babe said, shrugging a shoulder. "If you get it done right away, then you have free time. The more you do it, the easier it is."
Henry shot a look at her. "But it's hard! All the words taunting you, convincing you they're easy if you just try. But oh, I've tried. I spent some of the best years of my life toiling away for homework, and what good did it ever do me?" He spotted the Chinese place and pulled in, parking neatly.
"There's nothing easy about it." Babe said, slipping her boots on as she unbuckled. "But take it from someone who's been diagnosed with a learning disability, you just gotta keep pushin'." She slipped out of the car, stretching her arms up.
Henry got out of the car quickly. "You have a learning disability? Since when?" He jogged around the car, muttering about how sore he was going to be in the morning.
"ADHD." Babe said, waiting for Kai to climb out. She dug around her bag, pulling out a small orange bottle of pills. "I'm medicated."
Henry nodded slowly. "Never would have guessed." He lead the way into the restaurant, smiling at the smell of the food inside. It was late, most of the customers had already left.
Babe inhaled deeply as she followed, obviously limping. "That's what the meds're for. Help improve my focus on things I don't want to do."
Kai snorted, following close to his sister, like he was waiting for her to fall. "So, basically anything that isn't hockey?"
Henry grinned over at Kai. "Yeah, and so she'll be better at not messing up that ankle." He shot her a mock glare, walking over to the counter.
"Y'all gotta stop pickin' on me like this." Babe said, fake scowling as she leaned against the counter to study the menu on the board on the wall.
Henry nudged her with his shoulder. "Oh, c'mon, Babe. It's not picking on you, it's looking out for you. We only want what's best for you, you know." He hid a laugh when he looked over at Kai.
"I can see you two trying not to laugh, y'know." Babe said, not looking down as she nudged Henry back. She had a piece of paper on the counter, writing quickly with a pen.
Kai was shaking from repressed laughter, and stuck his tongue out at his sister. "Just making sure you don't have to quit the team, Babe."
"What? Laughing? Us? Never. Babe, how could you accuse us of something like that." Henry somehow managed to keep a straight face, not looking at Kai for fear he'd start laughing.
Babe slid her paper over to the lady at the counter, who was looking between the three of them in amusement. Then she turned, raising an eyebrow at Kai, who immediately burst into laughter.
At his laughter, Henry couldn't stop himself. He leaned against the wall, shaking with laughter, mentally apologizing to the poor staff of the restaurant who had to deal with the three of them.
Babe rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest as she watched the two of them laugh. An amused smile tugged at her lips, the corners of her mouth twitching.
Eventually, Henry was able to stop, shaking his head slightly as he did his best to look serious. "So, ah, science homework first tonight?"
"Yeah, yeah. Watcha got?" Babe shifted weight of her ankle, still leaning against the counter. "Home labs are always fun."
Henry snorted. "Hardly. The last time my mother let me do an experiment inside, I literally almost burned the house down. I lit the table on fire, and if we hadn't had a vase of flowers in water there, I don't know how it would have turned out."
"A fellow fire starter." Babe nodded, biting her lip to keep from laughing. She was the main reason there was a fire extinguisher in their kitchen.
Kai made a grabby motion with his hand, and Babe pulled out her wallet, tossing it to him. He immediately slipped off to a vending machine, poking at the buttons.
Henry nodded, amused. The air smelled amazing, like fried rice and chicken. He leaned back against the wall, tapping his feet quietly.
Babe hummed thoughtfully, her gaze drawn over to her brother. "Y'know what I just realized? You know a lot about me and my family, but I really don't know much about you and yours."
Henry raised an eyebrow. "I had a goldfish, once." He grinned over to her and Kai, glancing out the door to the parking lot and street.
