Coraline gave her best "pity me" look.
"Could you spare a cup of tea? I was sent to buy some, but a man robbed me. I simply cannot return home without the tea or the money sir."

Coraline gave her best "pity me" look.
"Could you spare a cup of tea? I was sent to buy some, but a man robbed me. I simply cannot return home without the tea or the money sir."
August shifted his weight, "I suppose. You could catch a cold in the rain, anyhow. Come on in, Miss,"
group
"Thank you sir, you are very generous." Coraline made her way to the door.
He closed the door behind them, "Make yourself at home, I'll put some water over the fire,"
group
Coraline nodded.
"Thank you sir."
The auburn-haired man shuffled from the living room to the tiny kitchen, fetching a pot— he'd have to fill it with the water pump outside.
group
Coraline looked around the room, assessing her situation.
The soldier seemed to have a keen interest in paintings. Whether he made them himself or bought them was difficult to tell by observation alone.
group
Coraline touched the frame surrounding one of the paintings.
"He has taste, that's for sure."
Most of them were serene landscapes, everything from the pebbly massachusettes beach to a southern plantation farm.
group
"This is beautiful." She was gazing at a painting of the Massachusetts beach.
August pushed open the door, holding the heavy cast iron tea kettle with an arm. Raindrops fell from strands of his hair and his chin. "It's cold out there,"
group
Coraline nodded.
"Thank you for letting me in."
"It's the.. good thing to do," he exhaled, and hooked the kettle over the flame.
group
Coraline moved closer to the fire, trying to warm herself discreetly.
"What teas do you like?" August asked, "I have English breakfast, Chamomile, Green, and black tea,"
group
"Chamomile, please." She had never had the others, but she had tried chamomile before.
He nodded, and left to find the tea bags.
group
Coraline put her hands in front of the fire, since August had left.
He came back shortly with to, "Pardon me," he spoke as he knelt, and dunked them into the kettle.
group
Coraline moved out of the way.
"How can I repay you?"
"Well, nothing, preferably." August replied.
group
Coraline smiled.
"Thank you, sir. You are very generous."
"I'm just trying to fix what I can," he replied, making eye contact. "My fellow soldiers don't respect their fellow citizens like they should. Colonists deserve the same respect as the mother country citizens,"
group
Coraline started.
"You're a soldier?" A soldier, just the day before, had tried to… do something to her, thinking she was of the… lower profession for women.
Not too far away, Annalise quickly dispensed the items and told her friends about the strange encounter.
"I am." August replied.
group
Coraline relaxed. This was by no means the same soldier.
"I am glad to here some soldiers are kind."
He half laughed, "I apologize on behalf of my dumber peers.."
group
"Oh, it is perfectly fine."
