(Possibly romance; PG-13)

After Matthias lost his leg several years ago, he prefers to stay in his house writing pages upon pages of his own stories and novels (which he doesn’t publish). When he does go outside on rare instances, he keeps to himself.
However, he finds interest in his neighbor, and sends them folded paper birds with notes written on them over his backyard fence, hoping to get a reply. This goes on for some time until his neighbor knocks on his door…

Matthias stood outside beside his wooden fence, leaning against his crutch with a nervous frown plastered permanently on his face. In his other hand he held a small folded paper bird. He looked down at it, turning it in his hand, debating whether he should throw it over or not. What would she think of it? Would she just throw it away? I just wanna know your name… He thought just before he tossed the bird over the fence and into his neighbor’s yard. Matthias clutched his pounding heart and limped away back to his porch. All he could do now was hope that she would read the note on the paper bird.

Blair glanced up from her work in the garden as something landed next to her. She sighed, hair wiping in her face as she stood and brushed off non existent dirt from her hands. Probably more trash from kids. She thought with a groan. She picked it up gingerly and saw that it was an organization crane, expertly folded. She glanced around but saw no one who would stake claim to the beautifully crafted bird. "come pretty pet, let's see how you speak." She cooed, seeing light writing on it. Once she got inside, she set the bird down on a desk and shoved aside a project she had been working on. Sitting down in an old, worn down chair, she carefully unfolded the bird and read the beautiful caligraphy inside

Such a simple question, with an answer just as simple yet could pose so many conversations, Blair thought with a small smile. She took a pen and wrote down a name everyone called her
Ro. And what might yours be, oh mysterious one? Could I call you friend or simply disregard you as a creep? She entertained the idea of having a new friend. Standing, she headed out and folded the bird back to its original form. She threw the bird over the fence

He looked up from his porch seat when he heard the paper land in the grass. He walked as quickly as he could to pick it up and unfold it; had she responded? A smile spread across his face when he read her note. Ro… What a pretty name, he thought, and pulled a pen from his pocket to write back, Im Matt. And no, I’m not a creeper so can call me a friend. He folded the paper back into a crane and threw it over the fence. He sat down in the grass to wait.

Blair was about to walk back inside when the movement of the bird hitting the ground caught her eye. She smiled and sat in the grass. She read the note at the bottom and couldn't help but laugh a bit.
Well, nice to finally meet my neighbor. And it would be an honor to call you my friend, Matt. You so realize there are these things called 'having a conversation's right? Instead of writing letters like on the old times. Though I do appreciate a nice letter or two over my fence shaped into a bird every now and then. She drew a little face and captioned it. Laughing emoji, not a very good drawer

Matthias grinned when the bird came back over the fence. He read the note and pulled out his pen again to write back, I suppose, but this is fun too. I don’t speak as eloquently as I write anyway He noted they would need a new paper soon..hm..he’d do that after she sent it back. Matthias stood up again to throw the bird over the fence once again.

Ro felt the bird hit her head and smiled "persistent talker, aren't you?" She asked with a small laugh. She opened the bird and started to write at the bottom. *It is fun, and I'm sure you capture the attention of a whole auditorium with only your voice. She folded it back up and threw it over the fence, hoping to get a glimpse of her new found friend, but only seeing neatly trimmed grass. she sat back down and waited patiently for a response

Matt reached to catch the bird but merely touched it before it fell to the ground. He picked it up and read with a light laugh before limping back into his house for a new sheet of paper. He wrote Hah, I appreciate your optimism in me, I like you A minute or so later with a new crane folded, Matt went back outside to deliver the bird over the fence.

She was already was set up for catching the precious bird. She sat on her lawn and opened the paper. "Talented friend aren't you?" She smiled and blushed, reading over the words. Soon enough, Matt sent the bird over with the next note he’d written, I don’t get out much, but it’s okay This time his hand reached over the fence when he threw it, gripping the wood to keep himself balanced.

The fingers flinched at the unexpected light touch, but didn’t move write away, only when the owner leaves down to pick up the bird and write back, I go to movies sometimes He threw it back over, and the fingers returned to grip the top of the fence again.

The bird landed next to her. She looked up and saw the hand of the owner and reached up once more to lightly brush them. Let me guess, horror movies and thrillers so you can show off your manliness to a girl who hates those types of movies? She wrote, tossing it back

The hand disappeared quickly when Matt tried to catch the bird. Instead he lost his balance and fell over with a pained “Oof!”
He tossed the bird over the fence again with a new note Actually I prefer action and superhero movies. Some musicals. P.S. I’m alright

She laughed gently. Are you sure? And I'd rather much prefer super hero movies than horror. What musicals do you like? She threw the bird back over, checking her watch and seeing that it was getting late

Matt day down in the grass, holding the bird and looking up at the evening sky. This couldn’t go on for much longer, he supposed. So he wrote back quickly, his handwriting a little messier, Great Comet Of 1812 (I wish it was a movie), Phantom of the Opera, and unmanly as it is, Moana. He threw it over.
