Idk, if this helps at all, but I think that's just kinda how it is with a lot of books. Like, look at the Harry Potter books for instance. The first book is sunshine and rainbows compared to the last one, but that doesn't mean it's bad or not interesting in comparison to the rest of the series. It's less dark, but still great start.

I don't know if you're planning on writing a series or not, but I would say the same about a lot of standalone books as well (The Fault In Our Stars is another example that comes to mind).

Can someone help? I'm really good at prologues and describing a scene with beautiful figurative language and imagery, yada yada, blah blah blah- but I have no idea how to interrupt it with dialogue. I just… I can't make it flow smoothly, because you open it up with this amazing picture and then you just blast in with characters talking. I have no idea how to transition so that the talking comes naturally, help.

So say you are describing something. Insert a little bit about how a charcter is reacting to the scenery, then use that to either open up dialogue about the scenery that transitions to other stuff, OR transition the character’s (and thereby, also the reader’s) attention closer and closer to the dialogue you want to put in.

Example:

The trees were beautiful. A loved how, even though the tree was sleeping, it still gave one last hurrah before it shut down for the winter. A looked over to B, who was also admiring the trees, seemingly lost in thought.
“What are you thinking about?” A questioned.
B shrugged, “I’m not entirely sure, to be perfectly honest. I don’t really know if I want to be thinking at all. At least, not right now.”

I just spent like 10 minutes watching videos on youtube about bell towers for a scene that I ended up not writing.

In other news, I feel like I'm going to lose my mind if I hear the words "bell tower." Bell tower doesn't even sound like a real word anymore but at least I finished the chapter?

When you're halfway through NaNoWriMo, you haven't even finished 2 chapters, and you're going to camp today.

I finally got to the one scene that I really do not want to write. It's unfortunately necessary to the story though and I've been sitting at my laptop for like an hour and have only written one sentence. I really just want to get it over with and move on but I can't bring myself to get excited enough to actually write anything.

Anyone got any advice?

Don’t think just write. It’s okay if you ramble; you can clean it up later.

what i did was I wrote an outline of the basic events of the book so that when I get bored with one chapter I can instantly jump to another that I'm excited about. it keeps me and the word count moving along. (i'm still almost 10k words behind but ya know…)

That's pretty much what I ended up doing. I also just described way too much stuff to postpone writing the one scene that I didn't want to write.

I made an outline for each chapter and I thought about skipping ahead to the next but I just kinda wanted to get it over with.

In any case, I've finished the chapter but I'll definitely be keeping that advice in mind for future reference.
