Venus's eyes widened. "Ender, oh, Ender, I'm so s-sorry!" Tears pooled in her eyes and ruined whatever makeup had survived the night.

Ender hugged her. "Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"

Venus was shaken. "M-My back hurts a-and m-my wrist a little…" Her wrist was slightly bruised from Mr. Tripp's ruthless grasp.

Ender squeezed his eyes shut. "I'm so sorry."

Venus shook her head. "I-It's not your fault. I-I should g-go."

"Do you want me to walk you home?"

Venus flinched in pain as she tried to stand up. "No, please, I'm fine."

"It's not safe, V." Ender helped her to her feet.

"I can make it," Venus insisted. She cast a fleeting glimpse at the door, looking for Ender's father.

"I'm sorry. I'll bring it to the House tomorrow I promise." He paused. "Oh! I have some good news I forgot to tell you! My brother is visiting for the next week and I'd really like you to meet him!"

Venus nodded. "Okay. Actually… can you please drive me home?"

Ender nodded. "Sure." He slipped back inside, grabbed the keys, and bolted to the car.

Venus slid into the passenger seat and started crying hard as soon as she shut her door.

"N-No it's n-not!" Venus sobbed. "I ru-ruined our date! I'm an awful girlfriend!"
