Can I have a one-on-one that doesn’t die out really quickly?

"Says who?" Joanna demanded, crossing her arms just as the shadow had been.

“Says me. I’m teaching you, you’re staying in my house so I make the rules.” He replied.

"No one is the boss of me," Joanna said stubbornly.

“Then you can leave. Either follow my rules and teaching or go home.” Sam snapped.

Joanna scowled say him fiercely. If she left, there was no telling whether she'd make it out alive. Staying was purely a reason of survival. She paced off to her bedroom and sat on her bed, miserable.

Sam frowned after as she left and the shadow returned, a smug look on its shadowy face, “Don’t say it…” He muttered standing from the floor and walking to the kitchen, grabbing a glass of water.

"Don't say what?" Joanna was instantly off the bed and angrily pacing back towards him. She thought he was talking to her.

“I wasn’t talking to you.” Sam called to her, downing his glass of water, the shadow that had followed him let out a silent laugh and he glared at it.

Joanna looked skeptical. "Who were you talking to then? There'sno one else here." She hadn't seen the shadow yet.

The shadow solidified and crossed its arms, tapping a foot impatiently. Sam was thankful he couldn’t talk, “Joanna, meet Shade, Shade Joanna.”

"Oh. Um, hi?" Joanna hesitantly extended her hand.

Shade shook it but it more felt like a light breeze then anything. Sam crossed his arms and huffed. Shade looked to him gave the best grin he could then disappeared, “Show off…” He muttered.

"Woah…" Joanna stared at her hand. The feeling had felt… strange. She looked at Sam. "So…"

“So what? I already told you we start training tomorrow…” he said, shrugging a shoulder.

Joanna walked over to his kitchen and began searching for food.

Sam rolled his eyes, “There’s food up in the top cupboard over there.”

Joanna crossed the kitchen and looked where he described.

“There’s dried fruit, meat and cheese, help yourself to whatever.”

Joanna took a package of dehydrated strawberries, smiling to herself.

Sam sighed, shaking his head as he started towards a nearby chair, "Have you ever thought about learning magic before? Has it ever run in your family?"

Joanna laughed snidely. "If magic ever touched my mother's genes, out would have died."

"What about grandparents or distant relations?" Sam pressed, crossing his arms.

"I don't know. My father died when I was… nine, I think."

"Alright then…" Sam drew his gaze to the fire.

"I don't remember him much," she admitted, nibbling on a strawberry.

"I'm in the same boat as you there, then." Sam replied.

Joanna looked up. Her eyes studied Sam's face. "Is that why you live alone?"

"One of them." Sam's eyes had glazed over, deep in thought.

"What are the others?" she asked quietly.

"Mother is gone, father is gone, no siblings," He sighed, "My power means I have to be close to the shadows, many people are… put off by someone who can communicate and control them. It's not a very common power."
