"You have it," Kenzie breathed before reaching up to capture Hunter's lips with her own. She pulled away slightly to speak again. "I'm yours."

The minute Kenzie finished speaking, Hunter pressed his mouth against hers, wanting to do nothing more than to devour her. His mind kept yelling at him to take it slow and easy, but Kenzie just drove him insane.

Kenzie gasped into Hunter's mouth at the intensity of the kiss. After her moment of initial shock was over, she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer.

"You were saying?" he said cheekily.

"You underestimate my stomach, Kenz," he said. "I could eat all of it and still be hungry."

"Good. 'Cause otherwise I was just going to wear a penguin suit to the ball and not the dress Willow and I found," Kenzie replied casually, looking around at the garden. She changed the subject, "You know, it's really pretty out here."

Hunter fell silent before shrugging.
"My mother liked planting," he said. "We'd spend a lot of time here when I was a child, hiding. It never worked, though, but we felt like we were safest in here."

Hunter slipped his fingers in hers, holding her hand tightly.
"Yeah," he replied, his throat closed up. "She was a wonderful person…"
He fell silent again, before talking again.
"She would never turn away a beggar, or anyone who needed help," he continued. "She would always shield me away from the terrors of the world. If it wasn't for her… I probably wouldn't be who I am now."

"Did she?" he chuckled bitterly. "I'm sure she didn't want her child to turn into a bitter man who only wishes to see his father dead. She'd be thankful to you, though. You're everything she wanted in a daughter-in-law."

Hunter laughed, kissing her on the head.
"No, she wanted an honest girl who stood up for people, be it family or not," he said. "She wanted a girl who could keep her son happy, who didn't have a problem being who she was, whose life didn't revolve around money, men or gossiping. I could say more, but you'd probably start blushing."

"Thanks. That means a lot to me," she said softly.

Hunter was glad Kenzie wasn't asking him anything about what his father did, how his mother had died, why he hated his father so much. He loved that part of her.
