Alya stood. “We’ll drive her there so you don’t have to, Mr. Baker. We’re so sorry.”

"You should get changed," Mr. Baker said pointedly to Violet. "You can't possibly dance in that."
Violet nodded, praying that no one would mention her dance at lunch.

Jason whispered into Nicholai's ear. "What's up with him?"

“He’s just strict,” Alya whispered to Jason.

Violet hurried off to her room and came back down later wearing a new outfit. "Come on, guys," Violet said, a hint of urgency in her voice.

Alya jumped up and followed Violet out the door. Once they were in the car, she turned to her.
"Is everything okay with your dad? You seemed…I don't know, kind of scared of him."

"I'm not scared of him," Violet said, not looking at Alya. She focused in starting the car once Nicholai and Jason were in the back two seats.

"Okay…" Alya trailed off, looking concerned.

Violet looked right at her friend. "I'm not afraid of him."

"Okay, okay." Alya smiled weakly. "I wasn't doubting you. Now, let's get to the studio!" She pumped her fists. Alya always found a way to make anything an adventure.

Violet smiled, but it didn't spread to her eyes. "Onward!"
They reached the studio soon and Violet casually pulled her duffel bag out of the trunk and entered the studio. The automatic lights clicked on.

"So, whaddya gonna do?" Alya asked, looking around.

"I'm gonna dance," Violet said, grinning genuinely.

“Of course you’re going to dance.” Jason laughed.

Violet threw her bag on a couch and connected her phone to the Bluetooth system. She decided to do a quick practice song before working on her preformance.

Alya raised an eyebrow, and smiled an evil smile. She took Violet’s phone and turned on a slow song.

"Aly!" Violet lunged for her phone. "Give me that!"

She grinned and walked up to Nick, slipping the phone inconspicuously into his pocket and taking his hand. “Looks like Jacob’s your partner,” She smiled and shrugged.

Violet frowned at her friend. "Let me have my phone, Aly."

Alya giggled and twirled, laughing. “You’ll miss the whole song!”

"Aly, this isn't a warm-up song!" Violet insisted, blushing.
