It had been three months since the mandatory enlistment. Three months of being stuck in the encampments, nothing happening. Each day the trainers would warn that at any moment they could be called to war, but as time passed, the stress died down. People stopped hiding in their tents and grimly struggling through their training, and started to laugh and mingle again.
It was early, though not by the recruits current standards, when the sirens sounded out the meeting call. People trickled out and started forming up in neat lines in front of the stage set up in the mifddle of camp.

Ellen pulled herself out of her tent, frowning at the sound of the sirens. What the hell was happening now? She made her way to the middle of the camp with the rest of the crowd.

As the last soldiers lined up, the camp commander, General Alicia, strode up onto the podium, facing the crowd.
She called a crisp attendance, frowning as she noted a few absences, then began talking.
"Now that you're all proficient in the basics of military drills, you will begin working in teams. You will be divided into groups of three. These two people you're pared with will be your squad until you're all dead, or the war ends. All pairings are final, and no complaints may be made. I suggest you make these people your family; you'll be fighting with them in the worst of situations.
"Your squad number and the names of your squad mates will be posted in your tents. Find them, and then report to the lunch hall. Dismissed."

(This makes me laugh because my sis's name is Alicia)
Ellen groaned. Great. Teams. What next? She made her way back to her tent, wondering who she'd have to put up with, and whether or not they'd be jerks.

Ellen found a paper posted to the front of her tent, with the number 300 on it and two names: Vinyan Raphael and Lennie Allman.

Vinyan found the same, only with the name Ellen Weaver on it.

Ellen scrutinized the paper. The names sounded slightly familiar, she was pretty sure Raphael was the one blond fellow who was overly friendly. She stuck her hands in her pockets and headed off to the lunch hall.

"Hey, you Ellen?" a voice asked behind her.

Ellen turned around. "Who's asking?"

A lanky man with black hair tied back in a pony tail and rolled up sleeves offered her an easy-going smile. "I'm Lennie. I think we're on a squad together."

Ellen nodded. "Okay then." She looked around. "Any idea where our other teammate is?"

"Uh…" Lennie glanced at his paper. "Nope! we'll have to ask around I guess. Maybe he went to the lunch hall already."
