'Kay! Sounds great!
The hangar hummed with noise. Ellen had reported to her commanding officer and was now headed toward the research vessel to prepare for take off. She frowned when she noticed the chipped paint that stenciled the side of the ship, spelling out Indagatio 4. Why the hell did they have to get stuck with this one? She walked to the other side, inspecting the slightly dented hull. One of the maintenance crewman waved her over. "Hey! Amar!" He called. "The head honchos wanted me to let you know that because you've been designated an older model, we've supplied your crew with an M.A. droid." "Thanks." Ellen replied, watching the hatchway slowly opened with a groan. "Nice to know the company cares." She muttered, boarding the ship.
Addie raced to the ship, one hand holding her things, the other trying to keep her her jacket on. She skidded to a stop just outside the door.
"Ellen Amar? Is Ms. Amar here?" she asked, sticking her head inside the door. She had to make sure she was on the right ship this time. The last ship she'd jumped on had been the wrong one, and… Let's just say the captain of that ship had been surprised to see her there…
"Who wants to know?" Ellen asked, leaning out of a doorway.
Owen walked into the old ship. He remembered these old crusaders being the newest model back in the old days. "Hello? Is Captain Amar aboard? Brigadier Owen J. Gordon-Whittaker present and reporting for duty!" he called out through the rickety old ship.
Marcus walked on board. "Captain Amar? Is this the right ship?"
Oi. So many people. "Yes, yes! This is the right ship! Welcome aboard." Ellen ushered them all in, signaling the crewmen. The hatchway closed with a hiss. "Let's head to the bridge."
"After you, ma'am." Owen said. Good Lord, they're all so young… what in the galaxy have I signed up for? he thought.
Adeline would have answered, had she not been interrupted. But, satisfied she had the correct ship, she walked onboard. When her captain started moving, Addie quickly followed.
They entered the bridge. Ellen leaned over a console and flicked a few switches. "Priming the engines for lift off." She muttered, forgetting for a spilt second that she was in charge. You don't need to do that now. Why the hell am I the captain anyway? Why didn't they make the older one captain? She pushed back her anxious thoughts and sat down. "By the way, if you see a spider like droid crawling about the wire work, it's just the M.A. droid that HQ issued us."
"Yes, I know. Used to work on a few m'self, back before the usefulness of my leg went to kingdom come." he chuckled. "Droids ain't nothing special, dear."
"All right, cool," Addie said, looking around. "Hey, where are the cabins? This stuff is heavy…"
"Yessir." Were M.A.D.'s even a thing back then? Ellen turned to Addie. "You go back to where the main hatch is, turn left, find yourself in the main hub a.k.a. the kitchen/rec. room, and take the second door to your right. That should lead to the girls' bunk."
Addie grinned. "Great! Thank you!"
She did as Ellen said, quickly finding the rooms. Setting her things down, she took a deep breath and sat down on her bed, placing her head in her hands.
"Permission to leave, Captain?" Owen asked. He hoped to explore the ship and examine the droid, he had worked on earlier models but this one must be much more advanced, and he wanted to figure out the systems and how they operated.
"Sure. We've got 20 minutes until the engines are good to go." Ellen flipped some more switches.
"Thank you, ma'am." he said, exiting to explore the ship. Good heavens. They get younger and younger all the time. Or maybe that's me getting older. he thought, walking through the ship's hallways.
(I love his thoughts. Lol.)
Ellen inspected the antique control panels. There were a lot of levers, switches, and buttons. She exhaled shakily. Ooohh… why am I the captain? I'm just the technician. Ellen frowned. Pull yourself together Amar. It's no use to continue worrying about this. She pressed a few buttons and stood up, grabbing her duffel bag and walking down the hall.
