Axl looked up to the sky again, watching the sun rise higher and higher. "It's more like a language. You just have to understand it."

"Well, I don't," Katie remarked, only half joking. She usually was a straight-A student, but she wasn't about to dare to tell anyone what her math grade was.

He looked over to her. "Maybe I can teach you." A cold wind blew making Axl glad he had his jacket.

Katie shivered. She'd always despised the cold. "I'd like th-that," she replied with a smile.

"You cold?" As much as he hated the cold, Katie was a good friend of his and he couldn't just let her shiver like that.

"I'm fine," Katie insisted, smiling genuinely. Axl always complained about the cold, she knew that he would need his jacket. "Don't worry about me," she added.

Axl stopped in his tracks, taking off his backpack and placing it on the ground. "See," he took one arm out of his jacket "By being friends," he took the other arm out, "I am obligated to worry." He placed the jacket around her shoulders. He immediately felt the cold rush against his skin. Goosebumps ran up his arm, but he ignored them. He picked up his backpack and began to walk again.

The jacket was exceptionally warm. "But you hate the cold," Katie pressed, hurrying to catch him.

(Midnight, Dusk, you don't happen to be on, do you?)

"And?" He slowed down to allow her to catch up. "You were cold, and I can't have you freeze on my watch."

"But I can't have you freeze on my watch. Here," she said, handing him his jacket and immediately missing the warmth. "We're almost at school anyway."

"Hmm…" he pretended to think for a second. "No." He ran a few steps ahead, forcing her to hold onto it. He turned back and laughed.

"Take your stupid jacket!" Katie laughed, extending her arm straight out towards him and planting her feet stubbornly.

He gasped loudly, placing a hand on his chest. "Did you just call my jacket stupid?" He put the back of his right hand to his forehead and closed his eyes. "Oh, for shame!"

Katie rolled her eyes and tried to keep from laughing. "Come and get it or it kisses the stone cold earth that we heartlessly walk on!" she threatened.

He snapped his head to her. "You wouldn't dare drop Jack."

"Pft," she hissed. "You named it Jack?" She bit her lip heavily to keep the laughter contained.

"I- uh- I mean," he stumbled over his words. "No. I didn't."

"Yes, you did. You just said it," Katie accused jokingly, not able to keep the laughter out of her voice for much longer.

"I -um." He had named it Jack. It seemed like a Jack. "Fine. Yes. I'm going to school now." He turned around and continued walking, feeling his cheeks heat up.

Colour drained from her face. Did she insult him? She ran to catch up again. "Sorry," she apologized softly.

A lock of his hair had fallen on his face. He brushed it out of the way. "Oh, I'm not angry." He looked to her. "Jack is."

She blinked. "Uh… I can't tell if you're being serious or not…"

"I am." He wasn't. He just loved to mess around with Katie and he had the poker face to do so.

"Uhm…" Katie squirmed a bit, still holding the jacket out to him.
