"I-" He looked at her. "I… thank you… that means a lot to me."

"It's nothing. Compared to you, I'm an ant."

"I mean… without mortals, what is a God?" He grinned. "We're equal in my mindset."

"You're just trying to make me feel better."

"No. I mean it." His grin faded.

"It's fine, really. I know that I'm insignificant."

Havenwood shook his head. "You don't realize your importance until someone tells you." He grinned at her again. "Anyway, you're helping me, which I find incredibly significant."

Maria laughed, but it was a sad laugh, one with sorrow creeping on from the edges.

Havenwood looked at her, studying her with his weird eyes. "What is wrong?"

"I just…. Nevermind."

He gazed at her for a few moments more before looking away again. "If you say so."

"There's my beautiful daughter!" a man just as tall as Pedro but visibly older said, sitting down by Maria. "And her wonderful fiance, so I hear."

Havenwood blinked. "Ah, no… señor, it's just… an internship. She and I work together." He bowed quickly, wishing to hide his red face.

"No need to be so modest about it!" he said. "Your mamá is very excited!" he said to Maria.

Havenwood looked at Maria for assistance.

"Erm, he's right. I'm not… we're just friends."

Havenwood nodded. "Yeah." I didn't know she thought of me as her friend.

"I see. Well, your mother will be disappointed, but I am sure she will understand." he said.

Havenwood blinked and decided against telling him that they already tried to tell her this.
