"First Lady" (because of her general personality) makes him take an almost parental role as her naivety and ferality makes her obvious to humans. She's the only one who can make him flustered because of her lack of filters. (They aren't dating, they're just friends.)

Dancing alone in a ballroom while La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf is played in another room. You'd be surprised by how much he does this.

As the King of Fear, he holds authority over the fear that breeds among humanity. His love for humans come from a place of pity as he sees them as pathetic, weak beings that need a "tutor of instinct." This "tutor" is fear, as it teaches humans to be wary of the world and know the dangers it presents.

Upon meeting "First Lady" he has since mellowed out of his kingly behavior and has become more knowledgeable of his actions. "First Lady" is completely immune to his powers of fear, so she can speak out against him in any way and not risk harm as he cannot make her fear him.

Although he loves humans, he does not love First Lady. She is the hybrid of two of humanities most feared entities: lack of understanding. The pale moon that governs the night and the feral ocean that humanity cannot contain. As the representation of humanity's collective fear, King actually felt contempt for her once he recognized her. But First Lady became very attached to King. Because she has never known fear, she yearns to know what its like. King finds this absurd and endearing all at once and humors her quest.

He's the King of Fear and acts like it. He's been around since when man first felt true primal fear and he functions like an ambivalent (leaning towards benevolent) manifestation of the cognitive aspect of Fear.
