his (unnatural in terms of us humans today) hair color is natural, though! it’s possible to be born with white-pink hair in this reality i suppose hahah

fairly skinny, due to his village’s generally lower income and more sparing economy in terms of nourishment.
he has a small nose, usually dusted over in a slight pink blush. his facial shape in general is rather small: slim, but not long. the lines of his face are not sharply defined.
his ears also usually look as if they are frostbitten (even though more often than not, they are not). they’re also pretty small and are often covered by his hair.
his hands are clumsy, slightly stubbier than average, and soft. he doesn’t often use them for anything that requires more force than painting or writing poetry, so he’s not very physically strong either.

• an off-white, slightly oversized (and therefore kinda puffy) tunic-looking thing. tied with a golden strap around the waist with two flaps kind of sticking out under the belt (i hope this makes sense). they have pretty long sleeves (he likes to hide his hands in them). the fabric is soft and not really all that thick

• lighter (but not as light as his scarf) brown boots that have slightly pointy ends. they reach up to about his ankle, and are laced up the sides with golden cords. but funny thing is, his shoelaces somehow always mysteriously untie themselves?? he never has them tied, basically. and he wonders why he trips so often....

• he usually wears a tunic that is very similar to his main one; but this one has short sleeves that cut off at about halfway up the upper arm and are loose there. basically the sleeves are not skintight.

• NOTE: i decided to redesign his main outfit because i felt like his current one was too “modern”-feeling, and since i recently decided on a few more things for his realm, i thought his old outfit didn’t fit. so i redesigned it. but i didn’t want to lose all of this, so i left my old draft here as well!

• he has a little golden clock locket he found on the ground of the beyond, and he’s unaware of the powers behind it. in it, he inserted a slightly faded picture of him and a childhood friend of his, zephyr. he’d always carried this picture around with him in his pocket and realized the locket was the perfect place to keep it. the locket is always tucked behind his scarf + sweater, and the only person who knows he has it is faye, his best friend.

• he wants to prove to, not only his family, but himself - that he is a good person. that he is not rude or selfish or evil, but that he is GOOD. he doesn’t even realize it, but it’s one of his biggest fears. being a bad person. being a bad friend. he wants to find zephyr so badly because, well, he likes him, but also because he feels that if he DOESN’T find zephyr, he’s failed himself. he’s failed the test of being a good person. and that is one of his worst nightmares, whether he knows it or not.

• isn’t really born with any unnatural magic/abilities


• however, because of the locket he has, he technically has the ability to time travel - but he doesn’t know that his locket can do that; he doesn’t know it can do anything magical. so he hasn’t used it before.


• in his realm, you are also able to use materials to craft things that can do magical things (to a certain extent), as well as brew potions or other herbal remedies that can help with things such as night vision, healing, etc. but he has no actual magic in his blood

• (kind of mild) social anxiety, undiagnosed; it’s gotten better over the years and thanks to zephyr and faye, it doesn’t bother him as much anymore

• stares at and shifts his feet on the ground when he’s nervous (which happens all the time when he’s in the spotlight, or when he doesn’t know what to say)

• he often tends to second-guess himself a lot, maybe due to the fact that he didn’t really get exposed to much actual care/love from his family early on


• so basically he kinda failed stage 4 of psychosocial development (based on erik erikson’s theory). he didn’t receive enough encouragement when he was younger, so now he’s rather underconfident.


• edit dec 2023: in 2021 i did this thing a lot where i would cite random psychological ‘theories’ i studied for about 30 minutes on a sunday afternoon, so i apologize for all of these... pseudo-nerdy references


• he never really believes in himself and will sometimes make self-deprecating comments in response to compliments and things like that, because he actually believes it. when people compliment him in general, he doesn’t like to accept them and instead adamantly denies it, saying he doesn’t really deserve the compliment (and it’s meant genuinely, not because of praise-starvation or as an act of attention-seeking)


• the idea of himself being a good person is slightly fragile, as he still feels guilt over leaving his family behind to chase after zephyr. he doesn’t want to be considered a bad person at all - in fact, i’d say it’s a fear of his. if you were to hit the right heartstrings with the right words, he’d break down and all his positive opinions about him being a good person would crumble. he’d think all of his actions were mistakes and would start doubting everything. and also he’d probably obsess over trying to redeem himself. to the point where he might, just might, put the future of the whole multiverse at risk. yeah, don’t do that to him (haha foreshadowing hahahahaa)

[ some positive opinions about himself, though ]

• he likes the way his hair + his eyes look during golden hour! he thinks they’re pretty.


• he tries to regard himself as a kind person bc he constantly avoids conflict and would fully push his opinions aside to avoid making someone feel bad. (this is basically a flaw at this point but he likes the idea of being a “good person”. though, as mentioned in negative opinions, it’s a fragile and easily breakable vision of himself if you say the right things.)


• he’s worked a LONG time on his self-image to think of himself as “good” and not be so self-conscious about his morality. now, he’s finally at a stage where he just barely does think of himself as a nice person (most likely due to being around faye’s parents; they’re the encouraging type). however, it’s still a house built of cards and it could be EASILY toppled over with a single tap in the right spot...


• he likes his poetry, even though he doesn’t believe it’s the best - he just likes his style.


• he believes him being so devoted to save zephyr makes him a good friend (contrary to zephyr’s opinion of him before the 2nd book)


• he likes his sense of fashion, even though it’s rather minimal. he just thinks it’s nice

• zephyr: he is the same age as coffee. they grew up together in the same dimension. the two of them were really close: zephyr showed coffee the world after his parents’ divorce essentially tore it from him. zephyr meant a lot to coffee! but coffee’s bad at processing his thoughts so he just never got around to saying anything about it. sadly, at 14, zephyr was taken away from coffee - and so things happened. (edit dec 2023: this is discarded lore... but still kind of integral to their story, as i haven’t really touched them since 2021 haha)


• zephyr is technically coffee’s past childhood friend. coffee obviously still considers him a best friend in his heart, but zephyr might not feel the same way, since zephyr actually believes that coffee betrayed him, which coffee is unaware of. (subject to change)


• faye: she is coffee’s best friend. she is older than coffee by a year. (edit dec 2023: i actually feel like retconning this, i want her to be the same age) she’s the only one who knows about coffee’s past & his secrets, and coffee knows they’re all safe with her. the trust is mutual. they met a short time after coffee left his dimension and landed in faye’s. coffee was 14 at the time.

• that caused him to become very irresponsible and unpredictable and unhealthily obsessive. probably had extremely high immoderation (in terms of the big five personality traits) (edit 2023: wow big five!). and he didn’t really set himself any lifetime goals, nor did he figure out his own identity or purpose in life.


• that also explains why he just up-and-left to go party with friends and didn’t look back. coffee briefly tried to stop him, but (xx) simply ignored his younger brother and left. who cared anymore, right?


• what if... this is a theoretical but what if (xx) has a character arc where he has the sudden realization that he’s just thrown away his life and is now doomed to live a pointless, meaningless life with pointless, meaningless people? and then he’s hit with extreme grief. and he really, really misses coffee. his old family and his old life. and then... no, that’d be so sad


• i’d assume he might’ve ab/sed multiple substances (if they existed in this world) and now it’s all crashing onto him - just how much he’s just destroyed. all the potential. all HIS potential. what if he tries seeking out coffee again? whoaaaaaaa. new book?

• they were always really distant from coffee since early childhood. they didn’t seriously divorce until he was about 7 years old, but it was pretty obvious to anyone who met them that their healthy family dynamic was dying out not even 3 years after coffee had been born. little microaggressions here and there, small disagreements.


• during the early years, they yelled at each other a lot behind a locked door, leaving young coffee and his older brother unsure of what to do.


• but around coffee’s 5-7 years, it was just quiet. heavy, horrible silence, the kind that eats at your soul and makes your chest feel full of weight. the silence was everywhere. coffee’s parents couldn’t really spare any more energy anymore. you could tell it was not long until it was over.


• and then it ended between them.


• bc of this, coffee had never really experienced - what would you call it - familial love? it did take a toll on him and still does, but you know, it’s okay. he had zephyr, which is probably why he’s still sane and feeling emotions.


• he was mostly independent of them at like 10 years old. he probably would’ve survived if he’d run away (since he’d learned some wilderness skills in case he gave into the temptation to escape), but he chose not to, because he didn’t want to drag zephyr along with him. he knew that zephyr would’ve wanted to follow, if he even brought up the notion of running. and he didn’t want zephyr to destroy his own life for him.


• (the ironic thing is that coffee, in the end, was the one who followed after zephyr, leaving his own life behind. i just think that’s a bit funny and i hadn’t even meant for that to happen)

[ old family ]

• in general, coffee’s family was never ever really there for him - he never felt connected to them in any way, and to him, his family really just felt like statues. distant figures. he barely relied on them anyway and spent a lot of time with zephyr instead


• coffee had an older brother who grew up and immediately got the heck out of the household. their age gap was large so they were never close


• coffee also had divorced parents. and neither of them really cared all that much about him anymore. they divorced when he was 7 years old but they’d never paid much attention to him for practically all his life, as the micro-aggressive conflicts between his parents had begun when he was a toddler, and they only built up from there + never were resolved


• after a few years of (barely) staying around to “support” coffee, his father just gave up and moved out to some faraway city coffee couldn’t remember. that happened when coffee was about, i’d say, 11?


• for a couple years, coffee, his older brother, and his mother all lived alone at home without coffee’s father’s support. then older bro decided to move out and leave behind coffee and mom, because it was a pretty crappy household... he and his younger brother were never close either so he honestly couldn’t care less about my poor boy coffee. this happened when coffee was about, say, almost 14? 13 turning 14.


• coffee’s mother stayed home but, after a few months of being alone with just coffee, stopped caring about most things. the dishes would build up in the sink. she would never change out of her pjs. coffee had to do all the house chores himself, and yet he still faced all his mother’s frustration; he was the only thing she could lash out on. he tried to deal with it but almost just gave up and ran away bc he didn’t like the atmosphere at home, at all.


• the only person he really had left to turn to was zephyr, until he was taken away from him too

[ new family ]

• after running away from his old dimension, he came across faye, who introduced him to a new family. faye was an only child until coffee moved in. coffee definitely likes this family more.


• she actually has a present mother/father in her life! coffee never had that really

• his brother is long gone, somewhere nobody knows of - probably with his friends partying


• his mother is probably still at home sulking, wasting away in her bedroom, doing whatever - she wasn’t sad, she was just full-on numb. nothing. only the occasional angry outburst that were always directed towards coffee. she’s probably still there, and though coffee knows it’s probably wrong, he can’t waste more energy worrying about her when zephyr’s lost. he does sometimes miss her and the rest of his old family, though. just sometimes, at his vulnerable hours.


• his father is probably doing just fine, no thoughts spared for his son ... you know? yeah. coffee sometimes misses him too, but has a feeling he doesn’t miss him back

• no offspring + does not desire offspring. pal,

1. he’s asexual (this doesn’t automatically mean no offspring, but it does play a factor for some aces!);


2. as you could probably tell from the other passages, he doesn’t have the best connection with the idea of a family and doesn’t desire to have one of his own. just a sig other is enough, or even just best friends, really

EDIT december 2023: please, i implore you don’t read this this is so embarrassing. this is how my writing looked in 2021 if i was being silly and writing bullet-point summaries that randomly became prose, for whatever reason... i won’t stop you ofc but it’s pretty rambly and useless LOL

this is kinda a long story with a bunch of unneeded details. tl;dr is included at the end

• coffee grew up in a pretty broken household. he had a childhood friend named zephyr. zephyr was the only one actually there for him, through everything


• the universe here works a certain way (read more about it in the universe info). basically, at 14 years old, zephyr found out how it worked. he found out how to dimension-hop. and one day, while they were sitting outside catching fireflies in the sunset, zephyr told coffee about it. he led coffee to the portal that led to the beyond, a dimension that connected all the dimensions. he told coffee that there was so much out there.


• zephyr and coffee decided to meet the next day to explore it together. but when coffee showed up at the portal in the middle of the forest, he saw zephyr being grabbed by a figure. the figure was a timelessly beautiful person, wearing a long silky dress in sky blue. their cherry blossom-pink hair flowed behind them, and they seemed to glow with a heavenly white light. zephyr was struggling against their grasp to no avail.


• “you must come with me,” the glowing spirit insisted.


• zephyr stared at them in confusion and fear. “no! who even are you? let me go!”


• the figure shook their head. “i am the beyond, and you must follow me. the information you possess is too dangerous to be spread.”


• “i don’t know anything! let me GO.”


• “no. you’ve found out the secrets of how our universe works. you must be contained.”


• coffee hid behind the trees, watching in horror as his best friend was pulled closer to the swirling portal. he didn’t know what to do. what was going on? …


• zephyr spotted his friend and his eyes widened. he tried to signal to coffee - do something! anything! they’re going to take me away from you! - but coffee was still frozen, petrified and in awe and puzzled all at once.


• until the reality of the situation crashed on him.


• his friend was being taken away. forever. he was being “contained”, according to the mysterious person. and he’d have no way of coming back.


• suddenly coffee realized what that meant.


• he ran forward, yelling at the beyond (was that what they said their name was?), “STOP! what are you doing? that’s - that’s my friend!” … but it was too late. zephyr had been pulled into the portal, the spirit disappearing with him.


• coffee fell down on his knees, staring at the portal in front of him. the vortex his best friend had just been dragged into.


• he turned back to look at the forest. his eyes turned to the direction of his house, far away from here. he thought about what he was about to chase and what he would be leaving behind. and then he stood up, closed his eyes, and walked into the portal.


• he was greeted with the beyond. the place, not the eerily beautiful but mysterious spirit. and it looked just like zephyr had described it to him. after meandering around the endless cherry tree forest, he found a clock locket, put in a photo of him & zephyr, and wore it, unsure of what it was. then he realized he’d lost his way home. he still couldn’t find a single sign of zephyr. and he was starting to feel a bit faint. so he chose a random portal, hoped for the best, and entered it…


• he ended up in faye’s world. he appeared in yet another forest. it was less dense and he could see that the day was fading away into twilight. before he could do anything, faye wandered past him and the portal surprised her. she asked coffee who he was and he told her his story. she believed him, because of the portal behind him, and offered to bring him back to her home.


• and they became better friends. they lived together for 2 years in faye’s small house, but coffee never forgot zephyr. he still wanted to find him. but he wasn’t sure how… (cue story)

• when they’re both 14, zephyr finds the portal in their reality + tells coffee about it one night. the next day they decide to explore the portal together...


• but coffee gets there, the portal hidden in the forest, and sees zephyr being kidnapped by a figure - the beyond personified. an omni.


• zephyr is taken away bc he knows too much, according to the beyond. coffee reacts too late.


• coffee chases after the beyond + zephyr and enters the portal, but gets lost in the beyond and eventually decides to just enter a random portal in the cherry tree forest and hope he lands somewhere ok


• he ends up in another forest in faye’s world, meets faye, and becomes friends w/ her.


• he now lives with her family, but he hasn’t ever forgotten about zephyr and wants to save him. (cue story)

( this reality doesn’t really have a ton of technological advancement, it’s more steampunk-like if that makes sense )

• despite what you’d guess from his name, he’s actually more of a tea person than a coffee person.


• he treasures his brown scarf and it feels very connected to his identity - especially since the browns remind him of his name. he’s utilized the scarf as more than just a scarf, too - it could act as a rope to use on adventures, it could be a little notepad... if you look closely, you can see little scribbles of poems that popped into his mind at the worst times, so he just wrote them down on his scarf.
