  Ramsey is Pem's older brother. They'll argue all the time over nothing but secretly they're quite fond of each other.

  Pem hated Lycoris at first because he thought Lycoris was replacing him. Eventually Pem warmed up to the mapmaker, though he would've be loathe to admit it up until the point where they literally start dating.

- Pem and Celia start off as enemies but eventually bond over almost getting murdered by some rich guy.

November 17th, 1974

Pemseus was born Clara Adler in East Berlin (the year is 1974) to Otto and Irma Adler. He had one older sister (two years) named Karolina.
Otto and Irma's favorite hobby was to fight all the time, about everything, no matter what. Their favorite topic was on the subject of Otto's drug use; Irma was really not fond of his addiction to painkillers. Irma would always insist that Karolina and Pem take part and pick a side, no matter what the fight was about. Karolina would always choose Irma, Pem would go between the two depending on the context. Their fights would sometimes escalate to things being thrown across the room and the cops being called after they were screaming too loud.
In school, Pem was known for being argumentative and rude, nothing at all like his saint of a sister. Karolina was extremely popular and even though Otto insisted to Pem that it didn't matter, Pem began to become increasingly jealous of her, despite the two's otherwise closeness. To make matters worse, Irma also seemed to favor Karolina over him, though she was at least subtle about it.
That is, until Pem (aged 13) realizes that he wants to be a boy. Irma, a devoutly religious woman and living in the Soviet-controlled half of Germany (queer people are a big no no), immediately loses her shit. When Otto tries to defend Pem, she threatens to kick them both out of the house. When forced to pick a side, Karolina agreed with her mother. That night, Otto packed up their things and left with Pem.
Otto, unfortunately, was broke and still addicted to drugs, making it hard for him to keep a job. He and Pem lived in and out of various sleazy motels. During the day, while Otto was either at work or searching for work (or searching for drugs), Pem would spend his time at the library. Still going by Clara but desperately wanting to change his name, Pem searched the books for a name that he felt suited him. He got stuck between 'Pembroke' and 'Percival' and decided to combine them into 'Pemseus'. He also decides on Archibald for a middle name. Otto approved of this new title.
Eventually all of their already meager luck runs out and Otto and Pem can no longer afford motel rooms. They're committed to the streets once more. Pem notices his father starts to seem off but doesn't worry about it too much.
On November 17th, roughly a year after being kicked out by Irma, Otto dies of an opioid overdose in an alleyway, Pem by his side. Pem sits there with his father's corpse for a whole day until he's found by Otto’s friend, Charlie. Charlie takes Pem in under the guise of “I was your father’s closest friend, it’s my duty to take care of his child now that he’s gone” but really he intends on making Pem (14!) a prostitute. And he does! Pem is forced to work as a prostitute for a year until November 9th, 1989. In the chaos and celebration that resulted when the Berlin Wall fell, Pem was able to slip away from Charlie and escape to West Germany. There, he ran into Ramsey Klein. Ramsey, feeling sorry for this scrawny little rat of a child, offers to let Pem live with him. Pem is not naive. Pem is well aware of the fact that Ramsey could be planning on selling him into prostitution as well and Pem does not care. He has nothing to lose (if he rejects Ramsey, Charlie will likely find him and bring him back to the shit he was in before) and everything to gain, so he accepts Ramsey’s offer. Luckily for Pem, Ramsey does not force him into prostitution, but instead takes Pem in as his adoptive younger brother.
Pem is a bit put off when he finds out that Ramsey is a thief, but he gets over it because getting free food and shelter without being raped is worth a few rich peoples' possessions. Pem begins helping out with Ramsey's schemes. Slowly, their bond begins to grow.
Pem, an atheist after his mother's abandonment of him, is put off once again, however, by Ramsey's devotion to the Catholic Church. Ramsey insists that if Pem wants to, he'll be accepted by the people of Ramsey's church because of Galatians 3:28. Eventually, Pem decides to convert. He takes on the second middle name of Luke after the patron saint of art, doctors, and surgeons.
One day, Ramsey comes home from a job gone awry with news of another thief named Celia Lange with whom he was now obligated to compete with every chance he got. Pem was only mildly annoyed. Later that month he brought home Lycoris Vogel, who would be helping Ramsey make maps of the places he would be breaking into. Pem and Lycoris did not get along at first, as Pem was infuriated and terrified that he was going to be replaced and Lycoris just thought he was obnoxious. But as the two were forced to spend more time together they got closer, eventually both developing romantic feelings for each other. Eventually they start dating.
This, perhaps, is the best Pem's life has ever been. So naturally, he must ruin it.
Pem slowly begins to break down. He steadily becomes more and more paranoid, convinced that Lycoris and Ramsey are secretly mocking him behind his back. Which escalates to him thinking that Lycoris and Ramsey hate him and want him dead. He starts lashing out and being even more of a pain than he was before. This leads to a huge fight between Ramsey and Pem, resulting in them not speaking for a while. Until Ramsey gets a challenge from Celia that involves stealing a precious family heirloom from a businessman in Luxembourg and insists the whole trio gets in on this. After nine hours and thirty one minutes they get to Durchdenwald's mansion in Luxembourg and to make a long story short, the job goes terribly. In a series of contrived events, Pem takes out Ramsey's eye with a letter opener thinking he's trying to kill him. Panicked over stabbing his brother in the eye and also still kind of believing Ramsey's trying to off him, Pem flees the scene but gets shot by Durchdenwald on his way down the stairs.
And this would land Pem where the story begins. Dead. At least he can rest now without the threat of a certain time traveler going back in time to stop him from dying in an effort to impress the brother Pem maimed. That would be crazy!

• Otto Adler (deceased)
  Pem was fairly close with his father, that closeness increasing after he defended Pem to Irma and subsequently left the house with him, then vanishing completely after Otto overdosed in an alleyway a year later. Pem still holds his father in semi-high regards after his death.

• Irma Adler
  Pemseus holds a lot of ill will towards Irma after she kicked him and his father out of the house after Pem came out as trans to her.

  Lycoris Berhtram Vogel (boyfriend)
  Pem hated Lycoris at first because he thought Lycoris was Ramsey's replacement for him but eventually, after hanging out more with Lycoris, coming to the realization that Ramsey + Lycoris are just friends and not brothers, and seeing that he, too, is very intelligent, talented, and worthy of respect, begrudgingly decides he would lay down his life for Lycoris (he has never had a chill thought in his head ever). Pem ends up falling for Lycoris, which infuriates him because romance is for BITCHES, but Lycoris offhandedly mentions one day that he likes Pem as more than a friend and they start dating.

  Karolina and Pem were really close when they were younger, which is why it hurt so much when Karolina sided with Irma about kicking Pem and Otto out.
