He has a littering of scars over his arms, back, and torso-- both from battle and imprisonment-- and his nose has clearly been broken and halfheartedly reset at least once before.

Previously, he was motivated by the prospect of companionship as a member of Ingric's company, and by his own desire to see Vældrac victorious in the war with Vagapariña. Confounding enemy soldiers with his fighting techniques was more self-indulgent plus.

After his arrest and bare-escape from Vældrac, Haffa has very little motivation, stuck in a sense of ennui and dispair as he battles wounds and sickness, carted along by his companions in a listless daze. When he leaves Aurus, instinct brigns him back to Ingric's war company, as he has no idea where else he can go, even though he was kicked out before.

After his baby-carting assignment, Haffa is mostly motivated by the desire to push against Oryn, in some moral tie between wanting Engrid away from them for his myriad reasons and recognizing that, as a kidnapped Vaga baby in Vældrac, Engrid is probably safest with Oryn: the beloved firstborn of the Crown Prince (tho Oryn was the kidnapper in the first place).

• He is generally dour and reserved, though once he was exuberant and entirely talkative. Time in prison has all but sealed previously loose and earnest lips, and adversity from former allies has steeled him against revealing his opinions and being at all vulnerable to others.




• He is a lot like Oryn Halyseð in that he has been fucked over by devotion to his oaths (maybe contributing to their shared hatred for one another). In Haffa's case, his youthful oath of marriage to Orick, which has lead to him ending up alone and slightly outcast by his military peers, tho Ingric has a soft spot for him and hired him in spite of his single-ness.

• He is horribly sick throughout a lot of the first part of his appearance in the story due to a litany of infected wounds and time malnourished in prison, requiring significant attention from Aurus after their escape.




• His infections and injuries lead to the amputation of part/all of one arm once his traveling group reaches Soleád/ Sivn'kya (depending on his character journey). This is a handicap that significantly affects his journey afterwards, as he cannot return to any armed forces and is led to the baby-carting mission with Oryn

Shorter-bladed swords. As a soldier, he liked to mix conversation and steel in combat, getting close to his adversaries and taunting them while using the blades to punctuate his words. It complimented Aurus' style of longer, greater-sweeping swords, using distance to observe his opponent as he fought. Though he was never able to fight with Aurus in real combat, he still preferred the shorter ranges with more up-close control.

After taking the lieutenancy for Ingric Ælfriseð, his uniform cloak is also a veritable weapon in its own right; he uses it as a shield, to tangle his opponents' weapons, and on the road, he lines the hem with a chain to deal some pretty oppressive blows as it swings around.

Ischvinðar: he is a fundamentalist, often clashing with the more nationalistic breed of the religion that has developed in Vældrac over recent decades. He is especially critical of the recent narrowing of saints that has happened within the church to only portray those who are of the "nation"/ whose stories support the nationalistic ideals of the king and prince (this key criticism is what got him in hot water with Oryn)

An unpaired lieutenant under Ingric Ælfriseð's command, though he changed rank to foot soldier when the fighting picked up. [His dissent] led him to be discharged and imprisoned. Now, he has no job.

Very tricky. He is objectively sided with Vældrac, though his beliefs do not particularly line up with how the military government has evolved as of late because of his view of the faith.

Myriad- Mostly running with the whims of whatever powers exist around him (military, Aurus, etc.)

He is particularly fond of horses due to stories of their bonds of loyalty with their riders. He harbors a secret wish that he could have become a cavalryman after Aurus Kiria-Na was taken away. His family and peers would never have allowed it, though, as cavalrymen are a separate caste of warrior from warpartnered footsoldiers (who are, further, a higher status from unpaired, conscript footsoldiers).

He was raised by his parents, their warpartners, and local elders who trained him in the arts of war alongside Aurus Kiria-Na and the other children of the town.

All of his education is in combat and strategic training. Haffa excelled in close-arms combat, Aurus with longer arms, and they considered themselves a strong pair before Aurus was taken away. He is basically literate and taught in the faith of Ischvinðar, both considered important tools in war for those expected to fly up in the ranks like him.
He is notably not trained in the art of debate or wordplay, or he would not have ended up imprisoned as an adult.

Not exactly sure of his story pre-Engrid: Is he still with Arurus by the time of the Red Storm, or did they split when Aurus and Yalka were run out of Sivn'kya? What does he do to get back to Vældrac? Is he a witness to Oryn's kidnapping of Engrid, or is he merely in Vældrac, begging some reinstatement while Oryn is simultaneously pleading for some protection of thier new infant charge?
