Royka isn't terribly devout and doesn't understand politics very well, though he comes to fall staunchly on the side of Harlan in the Eclipse.

As an apprentice to his father, the doctor, Royka has to take appointments for his father, categorize his father's mail, and buy and store medicine for his father.

Royka has never been formally educated but he learns medicine at his father's side.

Royka was born in his family's small home in central Irenna, killing his mother in the process. Never an emotional man to begin with and devastated by the passing of his wife, Royka's father was distant in Royka's childhood, leaving his son to be raised by his older sister, Jessa, and her husband, Miren. He was raised alongside their son, Lystyn, who was eight years his junior. Royka called his nephew Tintin affectionately. When Royka was fourteen and Tintin was six, Jess and Miren got pregnant again and went on a trip to celebrate. Their carriage crashed in the mountains, killing them both. Royka's father adopted Tintin as his own and raised the boys like brothers. While his father works as a doctor and his brother slaves away at an abusive job in a fish processing plant, Royka became the man of the house, caring for and protecting them both. When he was nineteen, he met a boy named Dax who was from the Academy touring Irenna's parish and the two of them fell in love. They maintain their tryst, even though Dax is now a member of the Sun God Orkas's clergy.
