Her mother was arrested for murdering her father when she found him neglecting Mary. Mary was raised in a very religious foster family. They beat their will into her, Mary is striving to be a "perfect" person. A lawyer like her mother failed to be, her mother couldn't be a lawyer since she was locked up for the murder of Mary's father. Mary is constantly dieting, she has her life planned out to the tiniest detail. This all changes when the law school she was planning to go to is blown up by a terrorist attack. Without any form of a backup plan, Mary freaks out. She ends up going to a community college where she meets Adam, the protagonist. The two find themselves working together and forming a strong friendship. Mary even builds a new plan that has nearly the same end result, then Adam takes her place at her dream law firm. Enraged, Mary cuts contact with him with a barrage of angry emails. She ends up in a less than dreamlike firm and continues striving for her dream. The two meet again at the start of the plot when they find themselves at opposite ends of a murder trial.
