Nature
Joan is...a bit odd to those who don't know her. She's stubborn and very determined, and often jumps headfirst into dangerous situations. She doesn't trust easily, due in part to her time spent living in the streets of Creston, but when she does trust someone, she's willing to risk her life for them. She has a bad tendency to jump to conclusions about people, often based solely on their first interaction. Despite this, she's loyal and a steadfast ally to those who know her. She picks up new technical skills easily, and has a strong memory that makes her a good recon agent. She isn't the greatest at conveying her feelings with her tone, and can usually come off as rude or insincere when she isn't meaning to be. Joan is very passionate and sometimes--but not always--feels her emotions very strongly. Her intense interests in things such as knives and fire (she's a bit of a pyromaniac) often unsettle people, but she doesn't care. She has a hard time expressing her emotions.
Rarely--if ever--makes direct eye contact. Wears long sleeves to cover the burn scars on her arms. Almost always wears her green jacket.
Very good memory, knife wielding, spying. Tends to pick up new skills quickly.
To protect her family, but particularly her sister Nella Walters
Sewing, working on being a better liar, petty thievery.
Self-conscious, difficulty expressing emotions, a bit insubordinate, often places the life of a single person above a group as a whole, untrusting. She's also a really bad liar, but she's working to improve that. Jumps to conclusions very quickly. Stubborn.
That everyone she befriends will eventually betray her, and that everyone from Victory Court is a selfish, vain, and stuck-up snob.

History
Born and raised in Creston to Anna and Lucas Walters, a young couple who owned a small shop in a fairly small town (at least by Creston's standards). Joan worked in it as soon as she was able to, picking up various odd skills like candle making, knitting, sewing, and others to make items to sell. Her younger sister Nella Walters was born when Joan was 3, and the two are fairly close. When Joan was fourteen and Nell was eleven, a fire broke out at the shop. Joan and Nell escaped in one piece, though Joan suffered some burns to her arms, but both of their parents died. The two of them lived on the streets for a few months working odds jobs as they tried to locate the only family member they knew they had left: Nicholas Fox, their older cousin who the girls hadn't seen in years. Joan began to ask around, and was met with distaste; she didn't know that Nich had become a fairly infamous con artist-slash-thief in the years since they'd spoken. Nevertheless she and Nell eventually found him...bleeding out in an alley after being shot almost literally in the back by a friend-turned-rival. She and Nell got him to safety as Nell did her best to patch up the bullet wound in his right shoulder, and found a backalley doctor to help with painkillers and to keep the wound from getting infected. While initially not thrilled with two naive teenage girls tagging along with him, Nich and his cousins soon formed a tight-knit trio of thieves with him as the face, Joan as the backup, and Nell as the doctor.
On and off homeschooling until age 14, at which point she was self-taught. She can read and write well enough, and is pretty skilled at math, since she did some bookkeeping.
