In a dare called "coffining" he jumped in to a coffin(big surprise) at a church in his home of El Salvador (not sure which part he can't remember anymore). Normally this wouldn't do anything but there was a collapse and he died. In this universe all those that die in a church are condemned to a life of reaper servitude so after this Andre becomes a grim reaper joining reaper corps (because there are too many people for just one Grim Reaper to look after). He checks in on his little sister (Abigail) until she dies of undiagnosed leukemia at 7. After this he designated himself into looking after childhood cancer victims, taking them to heaven or training them to be reapers/dryads. Along the way he also fell in love with a water dryad called Tora, and adopted a kid called Winston. The book is based of the different kids he helps

He was uneducated when he was alive, however having 200 years with looking after dead souls (some of which did not speak Spanish/English) Andre has become fluent in Mandarin, Italian, Spanish, French, Hindi, Arabic, Cantonese, Russian as well as studying psychology and doing research into cancer.
