Huxley Descant does not care. Or at least that's how he seems. He's very quiet, almost always speaking only when spoken to, and generally has a blank expression. While he's quite bright, he doesn't get much of a chance to show it, as any chance he had of moving through the ranks was stifled by his father's betrayal. Huxley, at age nine, was forced to watch his father's execution via hanging, which left him emotionally distraught and contributed heavily to his PTSD. Huxley is very apathetic, as his life has not given him much to look forward to or care about. He feels like a pawn being used in a game he wants no part in. After meeting Fern Raleigh, these feelings do slightly shift, since he feels that he can help her to survive. He throws himself into aiding her to an unhealthy degree, determined to help her return to her mother Adalia Speranza with little regard for his own life, something Fern finds less endearing than worrying, and helps him to find his own footing in life.

Stands extremely still, often with his hands clasped behind his back or at his sides. It's very easy to miss him in a crowd.

Part of DONT, a group staging a coup of the monarchy, although he really couldn't care less about the political state of Ehre. He was born to two of DONT's (the Dictatorial Overthrow Nautical Team) founding members, Tristan Descant and Felicity Bonne, and had little choice in joining.

• He used to play the flute, but one of his elders found it annoying and threw it overboard. He almost jumped after it.


• Despite living on a ship for most of his life, Huxley can barely swim, mainly because he doesn't want to learn how by swimming in the ocean.


• He's extremely adverse to the feeling of rope, due to associating it with his father's hanging.


• For similar reasons, he can't wear anything around his neck without starting to slip into a panic attack. If he's at a formal event, he'll have his tie undone and his collar unbuttoned.


• He can't read very well, which is something that he's slightly insecure about. He mostly taught himself how to by rereading his late father's diary.


• Huxley loves birds, and spends most of his spare time birdwatching.


• He really likes nature in general, and would much rather be alone in it than crowded onto a ship with a bunch of obnoxious people.


• He always gets up early to watch the sun rise, and stays up late to watch it set.


• He spends a lot of time alone with his thoughts, which isn't always good since his thoughts aren't always the best.

Huxley's mother died in childbirth and he was raised by his father until age nine, when his father was involved in the rescuing of the princess that DONT had captured. His father was then hung for treason while Huxley was forced to watch. He has never gotten over this and has reoccuring nightmares about it. He also cannot have rope touching him after this. He's taken under the wing of Carl Loder, second in command of DONT and is basically his apprentice. Though he has the skills to advance further, he's not allowed to advance in the group due to his father's actions.

Self taught. He can read and write and do basic math, but that's about it.
