The idea behind this guy is that he was a Nazi who was conscripted in WW2. At first, he believed Nazi ideals and believe Aryans were the superior race and the weakest of races shouldn't be around. During the war, however, he was horrified by what he saw. He was lied to, Jews weren't these horrible monsters that he was led to believe they were normal people and it was his job to eradicate them. He was part of a death trooper squad. Einsatzgruppen or death troopers soldiers who had to go from town to town killing Jews, Gypsies and anyone with physical or mental issues and burying them in massive mounds. He quickly hated what he was doing and was allowed to leave his death trooper squad.
He went AWOL shortly after and moved to New York. He carved off his Nazi tattoo and tried to change his life around. He gave up on his hatred and bigotry trying to turn around. He became a boxer and was very good at it. The mob tried to get him in on rigged matches. When he declined and fought fair and square they threatened to reveal who he was to his community. When he's contemplating what he should do he realizes that the mob is targeting his whole neighborhood.
When he's not playing ball with the mob in the ring, he's out at night fighting the mob trying to kick them out of his city.
