Godfrey Birch's family is one of the first to become Ghouls. Most people who are Ghouls have been bitten by another Ghoul. The first Ghouls were people punished for eating corpses, similar to the Wendigo. That's just another name for them. Some speculate Godfrey Birch was one of the first born a Ghoul. This makes him one of the most powerful pureblooded Ghouls ever.
