Rather short with no noticeable curves aside from her bust. Athletic build. Purple hair cut in a bob, with straight cut bangs. Dark, dark brown, almost black eyes. Olive/tanned skin. A mole under her left eye and on the right side under her lips.

She's rather cheerful, with a bright outlook on life, her personality belies her darker, more warlike ghoul nature.

She was born in Italy to an Italian father and a Japanese runaway mother. She was raised in a quiet rural town on a small farm.
When she was 12, a rival ghoul attacked her family, killing her mother and causing her father enough brain damage to put him in a coma. When the ghoul came for her, her kagune awakened and she fought back against her attacker, killing him and then feasting on his corpse as an insult to his memory. Once she calmed down enough, she managed to get her father to a hospital where he was hooked to life support.
Since she was technically orphaned, she was moved to her only living relatives': her mother's sister and her husband's residence back in Japan. She was then forced into school and once graduated from high school, she was kicked out of the home she was reluctantly provided.
She managed to work a few dead-end jobs to pay for college tuition, when she was offered a good paying job at a dog groomer's in the 20th ward. The owner of the shop realized Emi's rather sad situation and offered her housing in the apartments above the store and some extra money to pay for her schooling. She works as a waitress on the side.

A few years after she got settled in her current job and housing, ghoul investigators came to her workplace, accusing her of being a ghoul. That's how she met Sora, a Rank 1 investigator being shown the ropes by his superior.
After proving her "innocence" she and Sora decided to go out for coffee, and then began their relationship.
