In College
•When he was in elementary school, his father, Jonathan, succumbed to a severe gambling addiction, and his mother, Harriet, found out. This pulled an enormous rift between them, and Harriet grew quite volatile over it, sometimes taking it out on Deacon.
•The occasion that officialized the divorce was the one and only time Harriet hit their son. It wasn't a spanking. She genuinely hurt him in a rage. There was an altercation between the two adults that almost got physical as well, but they settled on divorce.
•Both of them fought valiantly for custody over Deacon, but Harriet came out the overall winner by a landslide. Jon was only allowed supervised visits, which he never put to use.
•Shortly after the divorce, Harriet was already moving in with her intended husband and his daughter, Rue. It was out of state and far away from Jon.
•Deacon not only had a hard time adjusting, but Harriet was still volatile specifically toward him, although she never put her hands on him.
•Eventually, Harriet started therapy and their relationship became much quieter to say in the least.
•On Dee's graduation day, Harriet told him how proud of him she was, and even apologized. From then on, he's always acted as if all wrongs had been righted. She said sorry, so everything was okay.
Family
