He started out as a ghost hunter, but witch hunting was always a secret passion of his. Eventually, he started to do both.
He gained a connection with Anoko after his partner and best friend, Frances, died in unusual circumstances. While he knew she had some abilities, he had no idea that when she said, "the angel on her shoulder," she was being literal. Of course, he blames himself for her death, but he doesn't fully comprehend what exactly happened there and some days it's like it barely happened at all.
After her death, he tried to commune with her. "For details" is what he told himself, but he knew that he just wanted to see her and be with her again. Instead, he accidentally let Franciska, the revenant of a young hungarian girl into his home. His first instinct was to get rid of her, but she stopped him dead with a request for help and posed a greater threat: Carmilla.
Notes
Previously, Anoko was involved with Frances' entire family, as they were telepaths and healers (they probably had a bit of fae blood in them). She kept them hidden and protected with her borzoi dogs and sometimes she made an appearance herself.
