He wants to appease his parents' desire for him to date Xiuling, and honestly would if not for some of her more prominent yet undesirable personality traits.

He's named after his paternal grandfather who did some not so good things to get himself and his family out of China. By the time Shuilin was born, he'd died, but he left the family well off. He had a somewhat lonely childhood. He gained his magic around 13 or 14 and that's when his sight started degenerating.
