He mostly aspires to honor his late brother, Lloyd, who died protecting him in battle when he was a kid. Since he froze up in fear during that particular battle, he's trained himself to be better at fighting so he won't freeze again. This can lead to him picking fights with people it isn't wise for him to be picking fights with.

Heaven's equivalent of elementary school, which is more prestigious than human schools... so uh, he's still decently smart but needing to know more than basic math isn't really a thing for him.

Nathaniel lived a relatively sheltered and normal life up until he was eight. He'd done lots of battle training, and was sent into a real battle for his first time. He was low-key ambushed and just froze. He was still little, after all, and real battles are a lot different than training. He was pinned to the ground with a sword to his throat when Lloyd noticed him struggling and fought the enemies off. Once he thought they were gone, Lloyd turned around for a brief moment to see whether Nathaniel was okay, and ended up being stabbed from behind and killed in front of Nathaniel. Nathaniel miraculously survived, but he's never forgotten that day. He's dedicated himself to become stronger so he wouldn't lose anyone else he loved.
A few months later, Nathaniel went out flying to clear his mind. After a bit, a duck hunter mistook him for a bird from the ground and shot him down. He hurtled to the ground and horribly crushed his wings upon impact, rendering them permanently useless. He broke several ribs, his arm, his leg, and cracked his skull during this fall as well. He healed, but his wings were still useless. He was exiled once he was healed and has lived alone on earth ever since.
