she graduated a vocational high school and graduated collage with a doctorate in neuroscience

she did well in her early schooling, and she went to a vocational school that focused on science.

when she was a teenager (~17/18), she and her brother, ikaika, figured out that their parents were creating weapons, technology, and other stuff and giving it to people across the galaxy, and when they confronted them about it, they told them that they were helping people fight oppressive governments. they let them work on some stuff with them, but they kept their involvement limited. unlike ikaika, she didn't push to learn more than what her parents let them know, but she cared a lot about the cause and devoted a lot of her time to it.

she studied neuroscience at a prestigious college, graduating at the top of her class. she went to med school, got her doctorate ahead of schedule, and began her residency at a hospital.

though she didn't do as much as ikaika and her parents, she continued to help them expose and take down corrupt governments. they learned about a group of planetary systems that they had tried to help that were united under one government. they were suspicious of it, but they didn't have any evidence that it was corrupt.

when she was older (mid twenties), her parents died of natural causes (old age or whatever), and even though they could have lived a lot longer, they chose not to. it hit her pretty hard, and she threw herself into her work to cope with the loss.

she completed her residency, and she was on the way to become an accomplished neurosurgeon. ikaika showed her proof that the intersystem government they had been suspicious of was in fact corrupt, and he left to completely focus on taking them down. she stayed at her job for a little less than a year after he left, helping the cause remotely, but she eventually quit her job to join ikaika and his team. she was one of the group's leaders and was the head doctor, in charge of keeping everyone alive and as healthy as possible.

they exposed a lot and aided multiple rebellions, and the government really hated them and wanted them dead. they tried to kill zakiya and her team but they had so many upgrades and augmentations and weapons that it was almost impossible to kill them.

in a fight against government agents, erika, who had worked with the group since it was formed, got them to go through a portal, supposedly to safety. it lead to a dwarf planet very close to the black hole at the center of the galaxy, and as soon as everyone but her was through, erika destroyed the portal, trapping everyone there. the team was able to get it fixed pretty quickly in their time, but because of the time dilation, it took eight years for them to get back in everyone else's time. they were ambushed as soon as they came through the portal, and while some got away, a lot of them were killed.

(the government wasn't actively looking for them during the eight years because they knew where they were and they knew they spot they would come back in so they made sure they’d be alerted when they came back and they were able to get there quickly to attack when zakiya and the gang came back. they knew they weren’t dead because of erika and just because of who they were, they knew they were likely to come back at some point so they were ready for when that happened)

the ones who survived learned that in the years they were stuck by the black hole, the government had gotten huge and had gone from having control over a few systems to many systems, giving them influence over the entire galaxy. the survivors, very wanted and having suffered heavy losses, were forced to split up and go into hiding. they kept contact at first, but the government was able to find and imprison/kill some of them because of that, so they had to cut off all communication with each other.

she found a very remote dwarf planet and claimed it as her own, getting a lab and everything she needed built on it. before they cut all communication, she gave ikaika the information he would need to reach her in an emergency. she stayed on her planet, completely isolated, for around two years. (not super relevant but i'd just like to add that she pirated college courses so she could keep learning and teaching herself new things while isolated)

the story starts here, but she's not included until much later

she learns that ikaika was arrested and being held at a federation facility. they had an agreement to never put themselves in significant danger if the other got caught, but she couldn't do nothing. she contacted [unnamed infp], who is skilled in coding and hacking, and he launched a cyber attack on the facility, shutting everything down and displaying the federation's corruption. zakiya hoped ikaika would take advantage of the ensuing chaos to escape, and through the little news she was able to safely access, she learned that he was able to get away.

a few weeks later, ikaika overdosed (not spoiling what happened before this but it had to do with a sloppy, failed attempt to take down the federation) and came through the portal in her lab, begging her for help. she saved his life, and he rambled to her about what happened before passing out. when he woke up, she made him go get amari, who he had ditched to go do drugs, and bring her to her planet so they could work out a way to actually try to take down the federation.

this is where zakiya makes her first appearance

she's adopted so she's not sure of where she was born, but she grew up at her parents' house and lab outside of a city

she was closer with her parents than any of her other siblings, and she's the most similar to them. they supported her schooling and interests in science and helped her stay motivated.

ikaika (younger brother)
she was closer with him than any of her other siblings. they have the same intelligence level (more or less, she's better in some fields, he's better in others), and they worked on a lot of stuff together when they were younger. his behavior and overall recklessness can really annoy her, and they're very competitive, but they love each other. they both worked to overthrow that the planetary federation, and both of them were teleported by the black hole. they both survived the ambush when they got back to the normal part of the galaxy, but they split up while escaping. they kept contact for a little while, but they learned the hard way that it would be safer to not have any interaction with each other whatsoever. they haven't talked in over a year.

andres, janai, teegan (younger siblings)
she's 6+ years older than them, so they're not super close because of the age difference. she was in college/off on her own by the time they were old enough to have actual personalities, but they got along well growing up. she stopped contacting them when she started taking the overthrowing governments thing seriously in order to keep them safe. she's had no interaction with them for a very long time.

she has a massive kind dog (it's jakey she has jakey [if anyone other than me is reading this jakey is my friend's grandparents' enormous collie])
she has lots of massive kind dogs: a huge collie, a samoyed, a bernese mountain dog, and a newfoundland,

she doesn't have as much tech in her body as the people she works with do, as she prefers her augmentations to be natural (with gene editing or whatever)
